New Octavia In WhatCar Mag

Quick enough for me, and quicker than most.

Quick enough for you? Just like a 1.4 turbo is quick enough for many buyers. ;)

And there are plenty of quicker cars on the road. Even my humble petrol VRS will put about 15+ car lengths on a remapped 170 VRS in just a single fourth gear lead boot moment from 3k to 6+k. :)

Im actually keen to give the 1.4TSi a try - people dismiss these newer style cars based on the power figures. Its the torque that gets you moving. :D

Nope, just the wife!

Not that humble looking at your list of mods

I drove a 1.4TSI SE hatch about a fortnight ago. A local dealer had just got one in and kindly offered me the chance.

My view is based on somewhat limited experience as it was going dark, the traffic was getting busy and I never got away from urban and B roads an never got above 50mph if I recall.

However, within those constraints, my impression was almost entirely positive. I had another adult and a child on board to give a rough idea of load. The engine was surprisingly responsive, feeling quicker than its 120bhp. The benefit of the turbo charger was clear: plenty of torque delivery from lowdown and in a wide range.

The engine was extremely quiet, and the overall refinement, both noise and ride was impressive, with just a little road noise from the front tyres and perhaps some induction noise.

The usual Octavia virtues of comfy ride and assured handling were there, probably helped by the smaller 15" wheels.i'd be interesetd to see how it managed at higher speeds with a bigger load

My wife, who's not very interested in cars, described it as "very impressive"! and for about £13,500k it certainly is. For most purposes it's hard to imagine you'd need much else.

I'm looking forward to trying it with the DSG next month. I did wonder if the engine had any margin for modest remapping, and if this would be OK with the DSG.

I hope this is of interest. Cheers.:)

Thanks very much for that Helix.

Not surprised after reading positive reports of that unit in the Golf. The DSG 1.4TSi Octy would be a very tempting proposition for me - be pleased to hear your views of it when you manage to get hold of one.

This engine would no doubt be well suited to the Fabia also, as a replacement for the current 1.6. which, is a nice enough unit but a tad thirsty with fairly high emissions. Again, with DSG option also.

I must admit when I first read this thread we were talking about the old 1.4 unit used in the Golf (~70 bhp) which really would be slooooow in an Octy which is a big old beast.

If the new 1.4TSI is putting out 120bhp then it should be quite respectable and a low tax band so Mr. Brown can keep his grubby hands off your money.

I agree it would go well in the Fabia. (more bhp and mpg than the 1.6 and more torque than the 1.4TDI)

It's the 148lbs of torque, as much as in the now obsolete Octy 2.0FSI, and from 1500 rpm that gives the real world driveability beyond what you'd expect of 120bhp even in the heavier Octavia. There's got to be a substantial market for this car with DSG, especially as there's no Elegance 1.8TSI DSG.
