A Weekends Work... but what about the grille!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just finished installing some new parts to my Fabia VRS this weekend :D

Installed a new Air Filter (Pipercross), a Seat Front Strut Brace (which apart from one on going big hick up was easy to do after some guidance from VRS Stu) And Cruise control (which was actually fitted by Stu, Highly recommend!!!)

But the only one I failed to do was replacing my chrome grille for a nice Black one! I have had the grille in Thin Bleach for a week and all it has done is slightly pitted! I decided to just spray primer over the top! And that came off.. Any one got any ideas how to get this stubborn chrome off?

Any help would be great Cheers!

sand it off?

did try for about 3 hours yesterday and got no where! May try a more abrasive paper but its not quick.

Cheers thou!

I'm sure I saw a guide on here somewhere..

Will try and dig it up.

I think you can get it off with a stanley blade,i've not done this yet but others have.

thick bleach... not thin ;)

still required a bit of rough sand paper,.... think i used that yellow stuff

Caustic soda (which is a constituent of both drain and oven cleaner) should do the trick.

Ive been peeling it off with a blade! taking a while but quicker than bleech so far!

I did mine on my MK OCty VRs, basically i just sanded the chrome with went and dry paper until it was properly "keyed" and then sprayed it with plastic primer, left it for a night....then a couple of coats of Black Magic pearl....left it a day and then finally the laquer

Did it back in June '08 and its hasnt come off yet.

It will look fine once it's been chromed

Only kidding, looks smart.

Looks very good mate

I'm glad it's gone on to better things than sitting in my shed

Looking good mate, so the blade trick worked then?

Yer its worked, you just have to be careful, I'm going to try and and create a black and white Skoda badge unless anyone knows where o buy one?

Don't the diesel octavia's come with a black badge?

Nope. And you don't need to remove the chrome, just key into it sufficiently that a decent primer will adhere to it.

Just thought I would post a couple of pics of the Strut Brace

Did you buy the Strut Brace new or did you get it off a member on here? Reason I ask is I put exactley the same sticker on the Strut Brace I put on my old VRS (Which was also a red 05 plate) which I sold on to a member on here, who sold it on to another member etc..... Just wondered if it was still doing the rounds !!!
