MFD3 fitted with bog standard black facia panel

Featured Replies

Got round to fitting my ebay-bought MFD3 today, and it is IMHO absolutely fantastic.

Followed Stu's guidance and website for fitting, and it was very straightforward.

As he says, the sound quality is excellent, and, unless you want to make your ears bleed, there is little need for any extra power.

Navigation seems to find it's destination very quickly, though haven't used it yet to test the quality of the maps etc.

Menu system on the touch screen is extremely intuitive, and finds it's way round an mp3 CD very well, displaying all the information you need on screen. I don't have maxidot, but don't feel any great sense of loss.

My VRS 'only' has climatic controls, so I had to make do with a black replacement facia panel which is less than a fiver including VAT from your local Skoda dealer. I must say, I actually prefer the look now to the standard silver VRS panel - you can make your own minds up. Did buy a spare in case I decided to spray it, but don't yet feel the need.

Glad I went for the Skoda version to match the green illumination of the car, and not the Volkswagen version with red/blue.

Have attached a few pics to show how it's come out - let me know what you think

I decided to spray my facia panel and I'm rather pleased with the results if I say so myself :)

I do have a photo of my MFD3 installed with the self sprayed panel - I'll dig it out and post it.

I too bought two panels in case the spraying went bad - thankfully it didn't.

To spray I simply did:

Halfords plastic primer coat

Waited to dry

Very light sanding with wet & dry - really quick

Second coat of primer

Waited to dry

Then it was just a matter of adding coats of Halfords VW Satin Silver until I was happy with the finish.

I didn't sand between coats, I did however wait until each coat was dry before applying the next.

Steady spraying and don't worry about if at the end of a coat it doesn't look totally even - you're building up via a few coats, the end result will be fine.

I think I did about 4 coats of the silver until I was happy with the result.

Whole process took a weekend - started on Saturday morning, longest delay was waiting for coats to dry.

I personally prefer the silver surround - hence why I did it.

I know of at least one person on these forums who has left his as black - his prefered choice.

Looks good :)
