TFSI Autotech pump build

Featured Replies

A good way of getting an extra few bhp on the 2.0TFSI is an uprated High Pressure Fuel Pump. You can go the APR route and get a new fully pump or part exchange your own. There are a couple of kits on the market where you can use your original pump and replace the piston and associated parts with uprated ones to give more pressure. I went with the Autotech kit.

Here are the Autotech instructions if you want more detail. This How To is a very high level description of what is involved.

For this exercise I purchased a new VAG pump as it cuts down on completely stripping down the original pump to clean and rebuild it. It also means that when I am selling the car that I can revert to the standard pump easily if the buyer wishes. Its also worth buying a new cam follower too as this is a weak point of these engines.

First job is to strip the piston part of the pump down. You need to remove the piston and spring by just pulling it off. It helps to have the pump in a vice for this part. I wrapped the pump in an old cloth so that the body would not get damaged.

With the piston and spring removed you are left with a retainer nut. This needs to be removed with an 18mm socket. Again place the pump in a vice.

With the retainer nut removed you can see the OEM cylinder. This can be pulled out.

Next start the build of the new parts. The only parts that will be reused here is the spring and retainer nut.

With the components assembled they need to be fitted to the pump. Ensure they are completely clean and coated lightly in fresh engine oil. The retainer nut needs to be tightened down with an 18 mm long reach socket.

Next you need to fit the spring and the retainer

(To be continued. I'll be fitting this during the week)

Thanks for taking the time - great write up and very interesting!

Remember to put the CYL1 to TDC before fitting the pump. Also don't open the drivers door while you have pipes disconnected.

When you fit it and completed your write up I'll tidy this thread up and move it to technical guides.

what does opening the drivers door do Stu?

It primes the fuel pump! Fuel everywhere. I'll be disconnecting the battery as a precaution.

Thanks Stu. I'll remember that.

The only problem I would have with disconnecting the battery is the potential for a spark.

How much was the VAG pump? Does it make it more cost effective than buying a ready built one?

How do you mean? Surely its safe enough to disconnect the " - " terminal?

Yes I am sure it is safe however, firstly I don't really think there is any need to remove the -ve terminal and secondly once it's all done there may be some residual fuel in the engine bay and even the -ve will spark.

I'm probably being over cautious and the chances of an issue are super slim but it's just how I'd do it.
