Damper / suspension replacement

Featured Replies

I've searched for info but not found anything which directly addresses my questions.

I was beginning to think the ride in my VRS was a bit bouncy with unsettling weight shifting during cornering. An extended drive in my local dealers Roomster confirmed just how shot my dampers are. I've found that for the cost of OEM replacements from the stealers, I could get some tasty upgrades.

Firstly, if the dampers are gone, will I have to replace the springs as well?

Second, what replacement dampers would you recommend? Bearing in mind:

1. I do not want to lower the car

2. I want good ride quality

3. Any improvement in handling is just a bonus (as I'm planning on getting a RARB anyway)

I've ruled out coilovers completely. So far the only options have been the Koni yellows (I don't want the sport or STR.T kits which come with lowering springs), Koni FSDs (expensive but maybe worth it?) and Bilsteins (also expensive).

I can recommend Koni FSD's :)

I don't pretend to be an expert, far from it actually. But I'm almost certain you don't need to change the springs as well as the shockers. I had my 05 Fabia vRS in at my local Skoda dealer (Scotswood Rd Newcastle) for a diagnostic report as mine was making squeaky spongy noise (quite technical I know :o) going over bumps. Found out I need both rear shockers changed as they were split. Quoted £180 for parts and fitting (not including £75 diagnostic ) which I didn't think was too bad until I went to my local TPS dealer and now have them on order for around £45 for both. :D

Going to get a mechanic friend to fit them, so going to make a hell of a saving!

Was thinking of doing it myself with a Haynes manual, but I value my life and of those I drive around so don't think its such a good idea with something this important.

Hope this helps you.

Matt

Konis FSD's will be a popular choice... i think theyre black too but dont quote me theyre so will retain OEM look... they can be used with oem springs no problem :)

FSD's are gold.

Koni FSDs - top upgrade, they work well and are worth the money IMHO, especially on stock springs
