MOT Advisory's

Featured Replies

Hi folks

Just had my Felly MOTd and it has a few advisory' items.

I need to replace my indicators as they aren't orange - they look OK to me, but that's nothing really.

Need to replace a couple of tyres again not much of an issue so that will be done soonish.

The other's relate to my Front CV joint gaiter they are starting to crack so need replacing. I just want to know what sort of price this repair comes in at.

I also need to get my O/S front to rear brake pipe replaced due to corrosion, again just a sort of estimate on price for that.

Apart from that nothing is wrong with my Felly apart from needing a good wash and polish.

is it the inner or outer cv gaitor that needs replacing?? the inner one will cost more to do because you need to drain the gearbox oil/refill and remove the driveshaft from the car... the outer one can be done without removing the shaft, the gaitors are about £5 and the rest is labour..

a new solid underbody brake pipe is about £30, plus fitting, no more than 1 hour i'd say, the whole system will need to be bled too so add in about £15 for new brake fluid

I think it is the outer set?

Can you not just put amber indicator bulbs in?? The laquer is prone to flake off of some of these type of bulbs over time ( Lucas 581 part number)

Phil

The indicator colour thing is subjective, but you might want to put new bulbs in before next year's test.

Given the difference in price between new gaitors and new joints, you're taking a sensible approach to the rest.

The indicators will be replaced soon. Not to worried about them though. Probably tomorrow I will get down to halfords for a set.

An advisory is just that, so the indicators will probably pass next year as they passed this year. As with the brake pipe, a clean up with emery cloth and a thick coating of grease and that should also last a few more years, mine have passed the last 3 mots after I got an advisory on them.

I know they would probably last another MOT but I will get them sorted as soon as I can especially the brake pipe I don't like to do short fixes if I can have it repaired fully.

:thumbup:Speaking as an MOT tester your attitude is spot on :) Good luck with sorting the advisories out..You would be surprised how many cars i see come back with items i advised on, failing ;)

Phil

If the bulbs are the ones with the amber tinting to make the colour then just replacing the bulbs should sort it.

Interestingly I once had an advisory on "battery insecure" (as it was secured using clamps rather than bolts, but did not move or rock forward etc) but presented in the same condition to the same test centre a year later it didn't get a mention. I have now sorted it out properly though. Last MOT had an advisory on a worn steering rack and track rod ends I made the (rather expensive) decision to replace them :)

That is all I am doing.

Brake pipes need replacing?

Must be corroded pretty bad. All that needed doing on mine was the flaky stuff scraped off then copper greased the pipes.

They don't need to be replaced I am just doing it as I don't like to have any potential problems with my car. They may be OK for another couple of years but why risk it?
