I think the point some of us are making about dogs is they make a property less likely to be targeted. I have seen first hand what a German shepherd can do and it's frightening. and if it came to it a dog can be just the distraction you need to get the upper hand. Put it this way i would rather have one with me than against, and if i were a theif i would rather target a house without a dog than with one.

if i were a theif i would rather target a house without a dog than with one.

Funny you should say that - I've lost count of the number of burglaries I've been to where the owners have had a dog (or several) and it's done absolutely nothing, not even barked.

yes i'm sure robbers love breaking into houses with dogs....maybe they see it as a challenge.

karlos69...i assume you are a police officer?

Surely a house without a dog is more inviting than one with one ? And i would have no hesitation on setting a dog on someone who broke in or for that matter defending my property with whatever it took.

I've got a shepherd too but if someone breaks in thats their problem. The law needs to stop protecting criminals, and start protecting the tax paying victims. I think once you enter someones house illegally you should not enjoy the protection of the law and if your **** gets bitten by a guard dog hard luck.

think i was too ironic there then lol.

as for ways of dealing with them , i have a letterbox cover so nothing can come through , and just them waking me up is enough

can phone the police from the bedroom , bad state of affairs tho when we have to discuss this this often, was'nt there a fabia se nicked over the wekend ?

Dogs can work as house protetion

My wifes uncle lived in a cul de sac in Birkenhead

every house in the cul de sac had been broken into over the twenty years they lived there apart from their house

He had three german shepherds

So he was either lucky or the mutts puts the light fingerd scum bags off

Yup, I know of people that have had it happen too as well.

We think one was drugged so they went to sleep as you only need to fart in their direction and the dog barks. Makes coming in late at night a challenge without upsetting the street.

That, or a burglar, LOL!

Don't get me wrong, dogs are a great deterrent I'm sure, but like any other deterrent (such as disklocks or car alarms and so on), they ultimately won't stop the determined or career criminal.

My friend has had it awful with his Ed.30 Golf. He went to Ireland with work for a week in the car and they broke in looking for the keys. Took a load of other things but couldn't find the keys. He got back on the Saturday, the police were there for a couple of hours in the morning... then dozing in the afternoon they forced through the front door for a second look for the keys - they did not expect him to be there, he gave them a right run down the road I can tell you!

He had to move a couple of miles up the road because of that, they got a dog too, but one day they'd gone to work in the Missus's Ka and the gits came in again through the front door looking for the keys. Didn't find them again, dog was still a puppy and was locked in the utility room. After this time he gave the Ed.30 back to our company and he's now using a crappy Saab diesel as they won't come after it. Such a shame...

I use my bluefin handset to disable the car when i leave it on public roads over night. That way they can steal all my keys, and they will still not get it anywhere. You can do the same with Revo. What better reason to remap your car is there.

If I caught a burgular in my house, I think I'd kill them to be honest. I'm a bit of a territorial monster. I'd fight to the death to protect what is mine.

If someone has illegally entered your house or property, then they have zero rights in my book. If they happen to never walk again or die, then that's their own fault.

Obviously (legally) owning a shotgun makes me a bigger target for thieves, but also a more dangerous target.

Bring back hanging.

A friend of mine was nearly killed by a burglar (stabbed in the heart with a screwdriver - he was in the intensive care ward for weeks), the burglar had already killed their dog. Many burglars are drug addicts, and drug addicts don't think very rationally.

If it gets like that I hope I can be calm and logical enough to just hand over the keys and get them out of my house as soon as possible. Cars are just stuff, and stuff can be replaced, people can't.

My house is very difficult to break into, and we don't have many of the modern toys (eg flat screen TV) that burglars are attracted to.

Very true. They are usually desperate people whose addiction has forced them to commit such crimes to fund their next fix.

Sorry to hear about your friend, but like you said, ultimately you can get another car, but you don't get a second go at life.
