light bump on curb

Featured Replies

help guys just slid into a curb at 10mph the steering wheel is out of line. and the inthe straight position the passenger side wheel is very slightly turning outwards. On closer inspection the steering arm near the bellows on the steering rack is slightly bent the car drives quietly with no cv joint or bearing noise has anyone ever repace just an arm or is it the whole rack if so is the main agent the best place for this?

look forward to your advice

cheers

I did the very same thing this morning in the snow, about 5mph.

Got a nice graze on the wheel now, and the steering wheel is about 30 degress off. I went to a local VAG specialist today, who suggests they they change the wishbone as he reckons it's probably slightly buckled.

£150 to see if that works. I need to have the front ARB bushes done aswell, so he's doing that at same time for £300 all in (and fixing the leak in the boost pipes).

my problem is deffinately a bent steering rack think this could get expensive!

I have a spare "TRW" steering rack if it's any use to save some pennies. :)

how much are you looking for?

I am in a hurry so much so I have just limped the car to my local dealer 2 minutes away and dumped it in the middle of thier sales forecourt which should please!!

You can just replace the steering arm - my mate works in a place that reconditions steering racks. I can get a price for just the arm if that is of any help? It can be changed on the car without taking the rack off as I had to replace mine last week. It's a bit awkward to get to and you need some big spanners!!

Just text him now to see if he knows the price off the top of his head . . . will get back to you asap.

My mates come back to me - for a new track rod it will be £30 including next day delivery if that's any good to you?

For the OP, I'm pretty sure that's just the arm. It's rare to bend the rack, because they usually slip through the clamps before they bend. If it had slipped in the clamps you'd have both wheels pointing ahead with a bit of right lock on, instead of a neutral steering setting.
