Wheel bearing and hub

Featured Replies

Just a word of warning. I had the n/s/f bearing changed back in August by our (completely honest, reliable - I make no joke there) mechanic. Just last week the bearing started making a dreadful noise. I went back to the garage and Dave told me that, in his experience, the hub is a weak point with these Skodas, as well as some Golf and Polo models. The wear in the hub has allowed the bearing to work loose, and both must be changed. He tightened it enough for me to finish the various chores and trips, and then to return.

If you have the bearing go, you might consider having the hub done at the same time. I don't yet know how much it is for the extra part, but it's probably worth it in the long run. I'll happily post the whole cost once I do know. The original job was £110 just for the bearing, so there's your benchmark.

Happy motoring!

why would the hub be worn??

do you mean the actual cast iron carrier or the bit that goes in the centre that the wheel bolts to, tbh niether of these parts move in relation to the bearing as they are a interference press fit, the only way the bearing could work loose is if the driveshaft nut is not done up tight enough or if the nut was re-used and subsequently worked loose, in which case all you would have to stop the whole hub/brake disc/wheel from coming off would be the 2 little M8 bolts that hold the caliper onto the carrier bracket. the inner race in the bearing would pull out of the bearing and them little bolts would just snap like a twig.

fwiw, i reckon the geezer must have either made a mess of the hub by not pressing it into the bearing dead square, or he didn't do up the driveshaft nut properly

I agree with TeflonTom, Ive never known a hub or carrier fail, just the bearing. Your best bet would be to get a second hand unit from a scrappy
