Voltage Regulator or Alternator?

Featured Replies

Hi All, The battery warning light has just started to come on, and dims as the revs increase on my 1997 Felecia 1.3, (No pas or a/c). Having read the threads, it looks as it is the alternator or voltage regulator, but is there an easy way to tell which one it is before I go buying the parts. Thanks in advance

First check the belt isn't slipping.

TBH, it could be either with the symptoms you have, but it is most likely to be the alternator itself.

The D+ output to the lamp just indicates that the output voltage is less than the battery voltage.

At first always try the regulator. the carbon brushes are very weak.

the regulator is not expensive, compared to a alternator :rkick:

Thanks for the responses, the light is off a lot of the time now, and then will only come on with higher revs. The next trip it could well be on all the time. I will try a regulator and see if this cures the problem.

in most of the cases it is really just the regulator
