Locking wheel bolts?

Featured Replies

I changed the wheels on my Passat at Christmas and the bolts were a pig to remove.

Unfortunately the special adaptor became damaged so I want to replace it.

I have a couple of options, get a new adaptor or get a new set then do I get ones from VW or can someone recommend a good quality set that are readily available?

I'll make sure I get some copper slip at the same time so I don't have the same problem in the future.

The chepest way would be to get a new key (adaptor). There are 10 combinations, but a VW dealer should have a kit of all 10 so they will be able to order the correct one. Or on your existing key there will be a number, something like ABC #, the # can be 0-9 and will denote the key number to be ordered. A key is around £10 and a new set of locking boltsaround £20.

Thanks for that, I wasn't sure what the quality of the VW one was like and wondered if I'd be better off buying different and possibly better ones.

All the heads on the bolts are fine it is just the adaptor thats on it's way out.

I wasn't happy after one of the standard bolts "was stolen" (long story, wasn't put in properly at the pdi more likely ) from my wheel.

I got a set of McGard Ultra locking bolts for about £32. They look quite nice too and seem to be one of them better types about.

I knackered the key not long after I got them but you can order a replacement from Germany with typical Teutonic efficiency. You do have to be careful to seat the key properly and not over tighten.

I like the look of the Mcgard bolts, better design than the rubbish ones with the 3 pins to locate.

They are similar in design to the VW ones I have. £35 seems a lot but cheaper than replacing wheels or an insurance claim.

I might get a price from VW and choose between the 2 options. There are lots of these on E-bay but not the ultra which would be the ones to have.
