Battery + Winter Troubles!

Featured Replies

Dear all,

With the onslaught of our Russian Winter here in the UK, my Skoda has given in! D'oh!

I noticed this when we had our first -7C day! Went to my car and the battery was completely dead!!! Jumped it, took it for a ride and then it was okay again. The temp dropped and 4 mornings later, dead again. It seems now my battery won't deal with being cold. Am I right in saying that my battery is kaput?

I hope so because I ordered a new one from Tayna.co.uk 075SE Exide Excell Car Battery (EX53) - Car Batteries - Exide Car Batteries

Please tell me it's the right one! I did select Fabia 1.4 from the list, which is what I have lol!

Finally, how does one change the battery? I did it on a Peugeot 106 but there was one screw and two cables. My Fabia looks far more complex. Do I remove the positive or negative terminals first?

Thanks guys, Jon

Dear all,

. Do I remove the positive or negative terminals first?

Thanks guys, Jon

ALWAYS remove the earthy side first (if you short earthy side to body ,both are at same potential and no sparks if you short to body (,if you short non earthy side you end up with sparks and burns, unless using insulated tools -which of course you should be doing ;)).

Replacement of leads -replace non earthy side first - that way that terminal has no potential above body and no risk of sparks burns etc if terminal shorted to body .(sort of like why birds don't get electrocuted landing on high voltage wires)

Thanks VWD! I'm a bit unsure/nervous now because I think I've got the wrong size battery :( I used Tayna.co.uk and you can select your make/model. I have a 2001 Y Reg 1.4 16V. The options on the Tayna website are for:

Fabia 1.4 (242 x 175 x 175)

Fabia 2.0 (All Years) (278 x 175 x 190)

Fabia/Felicia 1.9D/TD (All Years) - (278 x 175 x 190)

Obviously I selected Fabia 1.4! But now I'm looking at other places that give different dims and I can't see any on here or in the Haynes manual and I've misplaced my official manual.

Any thoughts?

Okay installed it - works fine. My Engine management light is on now :( Any ideas? I did take it for a 20 minute drive post-installation and it's still there.

Could be down the fact that you removed the battery. Cycle the ignition a ferw times and it should dissapper.

HTH

Either that, or try keeping the ignition on 'II' (or whatever it's actually called - the point where the dash warning lights are on, but the engine isn't running) for a couple of minutes before starting the car.

Worked!! Thank you :D

Could you let me know which one worked? Just going though the same pain now, Just got to get the battery out first - impossibolt - not yet dealt with.

Cheers

Jon

When you replace your battery, you may have to reset the 'one touch' open/close feature on the electric windows. Do a search on here to find out how to do it.
