Whirring noise from Wheels at 80-86mph

Featured Replies

Hi Guys, First time on this website, Advice so far has been excellent. Can you help me with a recent problem after clipping a kerb in the snow at the weekend. The rear drivers wheel hit kerb at 5-9 MPH. checked and took paint off the rim but not much visable damage. But once i go above 80mph a whirring noise can now be heard. I had it checked out by my local skoda dealer and there's no play in the bearings. Have i knocked out the tracking?

Also i have noticed that my front right tyre wears out quicker then left what is this due to?

Hello and welcome to Briskoda.

It might be worth getting the wheel balancing checked out, you could have buckled the alloy with an impact like that, in the meantime don't go too fast until its been checked.

Is the front tyre wear uniform or wearing more on the inner or outer edge? I would make sure the tyre pressures on all 4 wheels are as per the sticker on the inside of the fuel filler flap.

You could have knocked the balance weight off, bent the alloy, of even just taken a bit of metal out of the wheel that means it's no longer balanced.

Thanks for the advice guys. The tyre on the front drivers side is wearing more on the inside edge and the middle. i have been checking the tyre pressures once a week after washing the car and they're to manufacturers spec. Still cannot figure out why the front left is wearing more evenly. I'm going to get a new front set of Bridegestone Potenzas Re050A's later today and also ask them to check the balance on the rear. Would it be worthwhile to have a four wheel alignment completed?

Get a geometry check done, yes.

And also check the bearings on the wheel that has impacted.

It sounds like the RHF wheel has too much negative camber; a full geometry would be necessary to confirm (or deny) this.

Just had two new tyres replaced on the front, still only managing to get a little over 21,000Kilometers out of a set. Had the 4 wheel alignment completed. Everything was exactly as on spec. so the kerb didn;t knock out the tracking on the RH Rear wheel. Is the whirring noise now more likely to be a Bearing issue.

Also when driving in traffic the engine management light came on on Wednesday. The DPF light always came on if stuck in traffic never the engine management light. I rang skoda and thye advised me to call into the nearest Skoda garage to get checked out as the car would shut down after 50Kilometers Skoda Galway ran a full computer check and reset the engine management. Again today the light came on. Car now idles at 1,000rpm, also now running very lumpy in Mid range. At the last service they changed one of the sensors.

What should i do next with both problems?:thumbdwn:

Sounds like you still have DPF problems.

Was there a software reflash to help with DPF problems on your engine (maybe do a search ?).

Do you do much highway running ? The 125Kw PD TDI engines don't seem to appreciate lots of stop start driving in traffic, some seem to do a lot of DPF regeneration. Ones that are mainly driven on the highway seem to have less DPF issues.

Yes i do alot of motorway miles. Problem only started when i was in traffic this week,

Is it safe to drive with the Engine management light on?

Have a look in your owners manual to see what it says - I think you might be supposed to take it to a dealer immediately :(
