Had my car in for service today at 10,000 miles as told this was correct for the milage i do,yet the oil they used is long life oil,i thought that on variable servicing ie every 12 mths or 10,000 miles a different oil was used.also charged £19 quid for a litre of the stuff. Is the oil used correct ?

It is a result of actions like this that the term "stealers" was created.

My dealer spun me that story at my last service - guess who's door I will never darken again?

If the car is on Variable service the service period is up to 18k approx, in this case long life oil is used. A litre of Shell Helix for top up is usually about £12 for the dealer. At a recent variable service I was charged £36 for 5 litres (£7.2 a litre) Check with the dealer if the computer has been set for variable, alternatively in a few weeks do the check on the dash to see how many miles to next service. 10k sounds like the car was not set for variable.

The dealer that I use told me it was only £5 extra to use the long life oil over the standard. If that is the case it is a bit of a no brainer.

This was apparently the only difference between the variable and fixed service, so I stuck to the variable service.

No it's not always the case.

The car could be on fixed servicing, but if it's a VRS TDI then you have to use the VW507 longlife oil as it's the only one that is a low ash formula and so suitable for cars with the DPF that is fitted.

I don't know the situation with the petrol cars, but they might need to use the VW504 oil regardless too.

However, you might want to point out to your dealer that variable services are every 2 years or up to when the car tells you it needs one (up to a max of about 18,500 miles) whichever is first.

So either your dealer is treating you as if you're fixed and using the long life oil, which may or may not be required, or they are treating you as variable but setting the time to ever 1 not every 2 years.

On the variable service on my 1.9 PD the quantum long life oil is listed on the invoice as 5 ltrs £36.00

£19 a litre for oil does sound rather high.

You can get 5L of Halfords brand oil which conforms to the relevant VW standards for around £36.

Most dealers will use longlife oil in all FSI cars regardless of schedule.

This is because most dealers have two choices of oil on bulk, longlife oil and 10w40. You cant use the latter so longlife goes in. Saves them having a stores full of different oils for different engines and service plans.
