Octy 2.0 TDi - what's the point?

Featured Replies

Was reading through the brochure for the new model Octy that I picked up from my dealer. Can't see the point in the 140 bhP 2.0 TDI? It is only 10 bhp more powerful than the 1.9 PD TDI and it achieves a lot less mpg according to the brochure. So why bother spending more to get this engine?

Smoother? Quieter? Euro IV compliant? More tuneable? :D

As I understood it, bizarrely, the 105bhp diesel is only Euro III (as is the current outgoing 1.9 tdi's), the 2.0 is Euro IV. But more tuneable?

Suppose it depends on how you look at it.

From reading the brochure, it seems that the 2.0 140bhp is only available with the DSG gearbox, so this thread on the torque limits of the DSG box would be something of a limit.......sort of defeats the purpose......

Get the 105bhp, remap, maybe an IHI turbo form Jabba too..... ;)

2.0 TDI PD140 is available as a 6 speed manual so DSG limitations don't apply. :D

The 2.0l tdi is euro IV complient... my dad is looking at one and cant choose the 1.9 as its still euro III

Not everyone wants to tune their cars.. and the TDI140 is currently the fastest Octavia II (and golf) available.

In terms of performance it's not really any faster than the old 1.9 PD130 , and is noticably worse on fuel (5mpg less) , but it is a cleaner engine that meets the Euro 4 standard and that's why it has been introduced.

The other choice for the new octy is a 1.9 PD105 engine which is slower than the old 110bhp and only Euro 3 compliant , so for company car drivers could work out more expensive than the 2.0 litre one.

For me with a 110 old shape octy it means I have a choice of upgrading to a slower car , or a faster one with much worse fuel economy. I don't want anything that does less than 50mpg so I'm seriously considering getting another old shape octy (estate this time possibly) with the PD130 if I can get one for the right price.

Fancy a PD130 L&K Estate DrZ? IIRC Motorpoint have a few that are very cheap.

I must have a different brochure as my one lists 1.9 130 bHP. Also I have to admit I find it rather hard to understand how an engine that is less fuel efficient can be cleaner???? Anyone care to explain?

One of them would do me nicely , but my experience of motorpoint is that they offer the most ridiculously low trade in valuations so it often ends up costing more than buying from a main dealer.

I think I'll probably end up checking the ads for dealers by me that have pre-registered ones.

Or sell yours second hand? Taxi drivers are crying out for diesel Octys around here, I know of at least 4 drivers that are looking for one.

Bit too much hassle for my liking , and timing it so mine goes just as the new one arrives could prove awkward.

Oh , and William , the emissions standards for diesels measure both CO2 emissions (affected by fuel economy) and Particulate emissions (affected by how clean burning the engine is).

The CO2 emissions are higher on the 2 litre engine than the old 1.9 PD130 but are still below the required limit , however the particulate emissions are much lower on the new 2.0 and meet the standard which the 1.9 didn't.

Dr Zoidberg, just a quick question, how much slower is the Octy 2 with 105bhp than the old Octy with 110?

Ok , lifted from the skoda web site

The 110 claims 0-60 in 11.1 and 119 top speed , 54.3 mpg

The 105 claims 0-60 in 11.8 and 119 top speed , 53.3 mpg

So three quarters of a second slower and a smidge worse on fuel which is fair enough given that its a heavier car.

Now looking at the higher powered engines we have

The 130 claims 0-60 in 9.8 and 129 top speed , 52.3 mpg

The 140 claims 0-60 in 9.6 and 129 top speed , 47.9 mpg

So near identical performance but much worse fuel consumption on the new 2.0.

I'd quite happily give up a couple of MPG with an upgrade in performance to a PD130 , but especially with fuel costs rising I don't think I'd want a car that does less than 50 mpg

Interestingly the golf with the PD140 claims 0-60 in 9.3 , 126 top speed and 49.6 mpg

I'd still favour a PD engine (105bhp) over the old injection pump diesel (110bhp) anyday.

The 2.0 is the same block just with an increase in capacity and a 16v head.

Why?

What does the PD 105 do that my 110 doesn't

Well I took out a Octy 2.0TDi 140 on Sunday having previously driven the Passat 1.9 TDi 130 and been in a mates Golf 1.9 TDi 150 and I must dsay I was well impressed. More responsive than the Passat and not as harsh as the Golf nice smooth acceleration.

In fact I liked it so much I ordered one today :-)

Dr Z, my old man bought his estate L&K octy with pd130 engine and really likes it. It's not that much slower than mine either.

Come to think of it, a certain hatched sdi taxi driver has one that's even quicker :D
