Should i be worried????

Featured Replies

i have been using my car for sum time now for work due to the weather and that i cant use me bike, the thing is my washers ran out 2day so i thought i would top them up and take some time to clean the engine bay,

well the thing is when i took the oil cap off it had the brownish gunk under the lid!! i had just drivin it up the road and it sounds ok and runs fine, but dont this mean the head gaskets gone or summin??:worried::worried: and is it mixing with water cause when checked me levels there all ok, my oil seems low but it is due its service soon its done 37,201 ,

should i be worried is it going to go bang soon? anyone had this

any help great thanxs ian

They do get through quite a bit of oil sometimes. Is there oil in the coolant or not?

If its headgasket then the stuff under the oil filler cap will look like mayonnaise and it will be losing coolant quickly. If it's just a bit gunky under the cap then it might just be because it's overdue an oil change.

Does anyone know if there are any fault codes which can highlight HG failure? If so then it might be worth getting the fault codes read

This can happen if the car has not been used or is used on short journeys especially in the cold weather. The condensation at the top of the engine does not get hot enough be expelled and a browny mayonaise will form especially if you are down on oil. If you are not loosing water , your oil is clean when checking the dipstick and no performance loss you will be ok. My friend had the very same today and was worried and took it to JKM. All was ok. I recomend you top up the oil and go for a brisk drive long enough to get the motor well warmed up. Then check the cap.

Short Journeys to work?

Hi Ian

Just had the same panic going on with mine, From what I've seen on here if you are only doing short journeys and the car is not getting really hot they can suffer from a bit of condensation under the cap. I had the same fright when I looked under mine the other day, but it had not been drinking any water and didn't seem to have lost any power so I was starting to wonder about the head gasket aswell. Took mine for a long run and the next day no sludge under the cap.

I also got it checked by JKM just to reassure myself that nothing was going on and they gave me the thumbs up (thanks JKM)

Yours could be the same thing as mine, just a case of not using it enough.

hope it's ok, but get it checked if you are still worried.

Dare say someone more knowledgable will appear in a min to let you know more

Tim

not just short journeys, also leavin the car outside after a long journey, as the engine cools really fast and condensation forms in the head. because it cools it creates a vacume in the engine and iirc draws in moisture.
