Electrical Issues

I've noticed the red LED near the drivers door lock pin is always lit in my vRS now, sure it wasn't always like that. It still pulses when the car is locked but it's always on at most other times too. It will turn off when the door is opened and the keys removed from the ignition but immediately lights up when the door is shut. No other problems were apparent and all was working OK until tonight.

While driving tonight the lock mechanism started clicking as if tying to unlock the car doors, I stopped the car and removed the keys from the ignition to see what would happen. The clicking started again and then all of the windows automatically fully opened. Obviously this is a bit worrying, don't want the car unlocking and opening all windows in the middle of the night!!

Can anyone suggest what the problem may be and better still know of anywhere that will be able to look at the car on a Saturday?

Sounds familiar... Mine had these and other symptoms

I would bet if you can look at the central convenience controller in the drivers door, you will see signs of moisture damage on the pins. Clean off any corrosion, and try some WD 40 on the connector before refitting. AFIK the LED behaviour being on constant is a sign that a fault code has been logged. If you can get the codes read, see if any match the ones in the link above.

Hi thanks for the advice, is it easy enough to remove the door cards to check this unit?

Thanks for the link. I've had a quote to fix the problem and been told that if a new motor and loom is required it'll cost £380+ to fix!!

I stripped the drivers door today and located the motor connector, as expected once opened it was full of brown sludgy water. I gave it a clean, dried it off and applied some WD40 and the pins looked in fairly good condition for the most part. On connecting everything back together the red led switched off when the ignition was started, or produced a very faint glow but I can't remember if it always did that anyway. So far all seems ok but I may apply some sealant to the connector housing in order to avoid more water entering there.

Refitting the door was the easiest part of the task, completed that within 5 minutes, I was somewhat slower stripping it apart.
