Panasonic Fz-28 deal, any advice?

Featured Replies

Am pretty much decided on buying this camera, anyone got one or

can advise on the retailer in the link? Any advice appreciated, unsure

about bundle deal, how good the case is etc, do you think I should

just get the camera for £220 give or take:confused:

Panasonic DMC-FZ28 Digital Camera + Inov8 2GB Secure Digital (SD) Memory Card + CGAS006 Spare Battery for Panasonic FZ18 Digital Cameras + Strand Compact Case - Bundle Deal

Cheers.

Try going to your local Jessops.

They nearly always do killer deals when you're there, in the flesh, ready to buy. They'll certainly beat their ticket price for the camera when in store.

EDIT - plus remember quidco for discounts if online

I've got a Panny FZ28 and think it's the dog's danglers.

Don't want the hassle of a SLR, and the zoom range and image stabilizer make for a very flexible tool indeed.

I'd be tempted to go for the camera only, then get a 8gb or 16gb SDHC memory card from 7dayshop.com - spare batteries can be purchased on ebay for relative peanuts, as could a reasonable case, although you might find one on 7dayshop as well.

If you want quality pictures, and excellent flexibility, you can't go wrong with the FZ28 - it's got more features than you can shake the proverbial stick at.

Look on dpreview.com for user reviews if you want confirmation.

Be VERY carefull buying batteries for anything on ebay. Many are poor fakes, without over heating/over charging protection.

There have been many fire ,explosions and deaths as a result. They're cheap for a reason ;)

Sounds like you bought it pretty much for the same reasons I'm tempted by it.

I already have the Lx1, but its 'noisy' at low light, I believe the FZ28 is much better

have read the reviews on dpreview, most are impressed with it.

Thanks for that, there's a Jessops in Penzance, not far from me, but they're

shut on Sundays:mad:

Will go to Comet for a feel of it tommorow.

Cheers guys:)

I second everything theBrymar says - right down to the memory cards and spare batteries (there was a special on at a dealers when I ordered mine - got it for £6 delivered  but I suspect you'll end up paying £11 to 12).

Had mine 5 months now - great fun and tons of features, just bear in mind small-sensor cameras will be noisy i.e. pictures to print from FZ28 are good quality up to ISO400 (after that you need to do serious noise removal and tweaking).

And, get 2 memory cards (preferably Class 6 fastest speed) - one as backup / reserve and rotate them for usage ( I do the same with my batteries).

2nd thoughts - if you were to go with this retailer (and on reflection the prices are reasonable) I'd go for the £269 package - i.e. for the 8GB Class 6 card and the UV filter (leave this on all the time to protect that lens).

Thanks, and for the pm with your pics:thumbup: Appreciate that, some nice pics in there.

Well I went to Comet today, with the idea to handle the FZ28 and get a feel for it,

which I did, felt ok but...next to it in the cabinette was a Canon SX10, same sort of

spec but felt better made.

To muddy the water further, the Panasonic in Comet was £292 (online it's £217 or so)

but the Canon was £245 in store, no one selling cheaper online:confused:

I don't know what to do now, think I might go for the Canon.

Both are very good - very similar.

FZ28 a lot lighter so this may affect the 'quality judgement'. FZ28 also has HD video and burst mode is far superior to SX10 - and it takes RAW pics for the 'ultimate tweaking'.

BTW - the dearer Canon with the CMOS offers a better burst mode - but apparently the image quality is worse than the SX10 from the reviews I've seen.

The DpReview conclusion (and this site does seem more professional than many others and is highly regarded)

"The Canon SX10 IS has the slight edge in image quality (especially at lower ISO settings), has the longest zoom range and by far the best viewfinder in the group, plus a list of features as long as your arm (including flash hot shoe and an articulated screen) and - unlike some of its predecessors - it is very keenly priced. But it's a big hulking beast of a camera that's getting close to entry-level DSLR size and weight.

It's only a little lighter and smaller, but the Panasonic FZ28 feels less bulky, and though it lacks the Canon's style, it also feels a lot more user friendly (especially for the less experienced user). The larger screen, raw mode, clever AF tracking and HD movie capture are all welcome, and the high ISO performance is a lot better than we've seen in previous models (and noticeably better than most of the cameras in this group). Ultimately though, the appeal of the FZ28 is that it is a small, light, reliable camera with a huge zoom that offers excellent image quality and is easy - and fun - to use.

So then, the SX10 IS may win on points, but the FZ28 puts up quite a fight, and is the one we'd pick up when going for a walk and didn't fancy carrying an SLR. Two very impressive cameras; all the more so considering their sub-$350 price ticket, and both easy recommendations."

Have a good readup - buy in haste repent in leisure etc.. ;)

Care to give even one example of someone dying from an ebay battery?

I've bought plenty of camera betteries (cheap clones from HK mostly) and they are all fine.

Common link appears to be dodgy mobile phone batteries, and was so well documented that Nokia actually had a page on their website to check which batteries/phones were affected.

I have 2 ebay camera batteries, and one camcorder battery, and have also had no problems with any of them.

The issue applies to any lithium battery. None of the fakes to my knowledge have the over temp/charge circuitry, which why they are so cheap. If they did, then the savings wouldnt be as big.

I have an email somewhere with pictures of the damage they cause, including a bed that caught fire as the charger next to it went up because the battery was wired wrongly.

Dpreview are very good, already in my favourites list, I've added the two above

as well, am leaning back towards the FZ-28 now.

Cheers:)

Anonymouse's summing up of the FZ28 is spot on. Have seen some of her pictures, and they back up my view that the FZ28 is one of the best all-rounders for the money.

I have had a Canon S3 before, which had the benefit of the twist and tilt screen, which is a great feature in itself, but I don't think the images it produced compare to the FZ28.

The reviews say it all - obviously there will be other cameras around the corner, which might be even better - but if you keep waiting, like computers, you'd never actually get round to buying anything.

I don't think you'd be disappointed - I certainly haven't been.

Have seen some of her pictures

Ahem, the her is a him

Last time I looked anyway
