Total mileage readout and other questions

Featured Replies

Just picked up my first ever Skoda this morning. Brand new [08 model year] 1.9 Octavia Estate Ambiente.

I'm impressed so far (only a few hours though).

I've read the manuals, but still have a few questions:

1. Can you have the total mileage [not trip] displayed all the time. I don't seem to have this option. I've got the plain LCD display. It shows the time and trip mileage constantly and if I flick through all the optional displays I find I can show 2 other trip mileages, buit not the total mileage.

2. If I press the unlock button on the key once, it only opens unlocks the drivers door. If I press it twice it opens all the doors. The manual seems to suggest that you can have this feature [single press opening the drivers door only] activated by the dealer if you want it. I seem to have got it by default........or is it a fault.

3. I've done the searches and this subject has been covered many, many times...........but, I'm middle aged and not up with modern technology [i only got my first mp3 (ipod) player 3 months ago] so don't really understand some of the answers and the dealer didn't appear to have any more idea than me. I'd like to attache my ipod to the radio/cd - it's the stream model. The dealer said that with the Skoda adaptor I'll lose the cd changer [i'd understood that from the forum], but when I read the stream manual it seems to suggest that it has an aux input setting in addition to the cd changer. Can anybody clarify.

I've seen the Dension product that seems to allow you to keep cd changer function, but the dealer doesn't offer that option. Would you have a non-Skoda option fitted on a new car and would it void any aspects of the warranty.

4. Just a small aside. It had 20 miles on it when I picked it up - I didn't think this was a problem, but asked him how the miles had been put on. His first reply was that by law it could have up to 250 miles and it would still be classed as brand new. I said I wouldn't be happy if I turned up to collect a brand new car with 250 miles on. He went on to explain that the 20 miles would be typical delivery movements and road tests at the factory and garage.

What's the most miles you've seen on a 'brand new' car?

Thanks in anticipation, but I'm sure I'll have other 'stupid' questions in the next few days/weeks.

1. Not unless you have maxidot that you don't appear to have.

2. This is standard as far as I'm aware, both my vRS's have been the same.

3. If you have a jumbo box there should an aux socket in there to plug your mp3 directly into.

4. I think mine had about 20 miles on it when I collected it so don't worry. Like you I would be pi55ed off if it had had 250 miles on it.

Jonno answers the questions - however, with the Ipod and the denison, it would allow you to operate your ipod from the Stream HU.

20 miles is normal - however, there is a way to reset it back to 0 before 100 miles ;)

20 miles is pretty normal.

Yup but its illegal ;)

I was OK with the 20 miles, it was just him saying about the 250 miles got me interested.

Don't have the jumbo box.

you can switch between the trip and total mileage, I believe you need to press the trip reset briefly and it will change the display. it will however go back to trip again the next time you start the engine.

When you switch the IGN off the mileage is displayed. If you want it all the time displayed you have to press and hold the small trip button(bottom of inst) to display it but fter you switch off the IGN it will defaulkt back to trip again.I found this on mine also so i just keep the instant MPG display instead of mileage.

I've read the manuals, but still have a few questions:

Welcome to the club! I hope you have many happy hours of driving with your Octy, and I'd congratulate you on coming here - I've found it a very useful resource with numerous very helpful folk.

1. Can you have the total mileage [not trip] displayed all the time. I don't seem to have this option. I've got the plain LCD display. It shows the time and trip mileage constantly and if I flick through all the optional displays I find I can show 2 other trip mileages, buit not the total mileage.

As you'll have seen elsewhere in this thread, it's possible but not "easy" or permanent. It's a pain and one of the less endearing features of the car, but I got used to it after a few weeks; "in-flight" I'm more concerned about the fuel gauge/tripmeter anyway - it's now just a sub-conscious part of routine to mentally note what the total mileage is every time that I ge home. Not a totally satisfactory answer, I'll grant, but I'm just suggesting that it's not the worst shortcoming in the world.

2. If I press the unlock button on the key once, it only opens unlocks the drivers door. If I press it twice it opens all the doors. That's how mine came, but I did buy mine as an ex-demo model. In your case, I guess it might have been set as a default during PDI. I wouldn't worry about it. (And as somebody who drives alone most of the time, I find it a welcome security feature.)

Between myself, family and friends, the lowest Ive heard of is about 6.8, and the highest about 37.

Yeah, I'd be brassed off if it had much more than 50 miles on it to be honest.

Re 2..mine was the same, pain in the bum..took it back to the dealers, and they sorted it in a few minutes on their computer, free of charge..one click now opens all the doors :)

Mine only had 4point something miles on it! Given that the dealer is in inner London, with solid traffic for miles, I guess it didn't go far on road test!!

My current 05 Octy2 is a fleet car and had 53 miles on the clock when it was delivered to where I worked. It was delivered on a flat-bed delivery truck, so mileage seemed a bit high.

Mind you, I once took a car for an MOT and 6000 mile sevice and it had done 25miles extra when I picked it up. When I complained, they knocked a fiver of the bill and said they had just gone to get some brake pads for it, othererwise it wouldn't have been ready in time.

All the points have been answered above. I now have maxidot and can constantly have the mileage showing not that it matters as I got used to having to alter the display on my previous Octy to find it for claims etc. You might resort to having the number of miles left in the tank showing instead. Mine had 14 on it when I got it from Simpsons which wasn't too bad.

Re fitting Ipod, the dealer fit option for controlling your ipod through your stream is a Denison gateway unit, usually a gateway 100 i think. Adding a cd retention adaptor should not cause too much of a problem. You can order the whole lot of the internet for about 150 notes and it shoulnt take much to get a local car audio specialist to fit it and cost 30-50ish.

if you go for a full blown skoda ipod kit you can iirc have full control of your ipod via the head unit. However its easy enough to make a lead yourself as ive done and then you dont loose the cd changer (not that i use mine). I have done a write up on how to do it yourself and for hell of a lot less (if you dont mind controlling the music by pressing the ipod buttons) and the cup holder makes a great holder too unless you want to spend a few quid on a vent grill holder for it then you can press to skip a track without taking your eyes off the road.

You can also find someone with vag com on here and they can knock off the 1 blip for drivers 2 blips to unlock all and have all unlock on one blip (key press).

There is plenty more you can do to it with vag com, just look over the forum and you will see

I know this is a dead thread, but you can display milage instead of trip. Just PRESS the reset trip milage once, and hey presto!
