Options on New Octavia-advice

Featured Replies

Hi, First post so please excuse me if in wrong place etc!

In process of moving from a 06 Elegance 1.9PD to the equivalent new "face lift" model. My old car has a button marked ASR which came as standard and I assume is a stability control device. The new model has an "option" of ESP (£365). Is this the same as ASR and if it is it's a backwards step by Skoda to place it as an option?

Also current brochure and Skodas customer services (on phone-twice) told me that privacy glass is only available on estates. After emailing them I have now been told I can have the privacy glass.

Any advice greatfully received.

ASR is not ESP. ASR is traction control and only serves to cut the power from the engine to stop the wheels from spinning. ESP will brake individual wheels etc in an attempt to keep the car going where it should be. ESP has always been an option on non VRS cars. It is a shame Skoda have not chosen to make ESP standard with the facelift. It is standard on the Golf. It is also priced irritatingly high - probably high enough to put most people off, which is a shame given it is potentially life saving.

ESP is a far better safety device than ASR.

ASR just stops wheels spinning (i.e. under heavy acceleration) ESP however manages grip on all 4 wheels and delivers power to those which need it. (for example cornering and meeting patrch of wet road/gravel etc.)

A great safety feature, which hopefully you'll never put to use!

Thanks for that clear advice.

ASR is Anti Skid Restraint, (as said, Traction Control). ESP is far far better.

No it isn't, it's Anti Slip Regulation.

It's not quite the same as traction control. If you're car doesn't have EDL then I'd say ASR is effectively your traction control. If you car does have EDL then EDL + ASR = your traction control.

I don't think it's accurate to say ASR = traction control because it doesn't tell the whole story!

As stated in my previous post, ASR is not necessarily the same as traction control, it could be merely a component of it, depending on your car.

My car has EDL, so therefore I would not describe ASR as being the same as traction control. I would be happy calling traction control the umbrella term for EDL + ASR!

Ok :)
