Octavia nearly set on fire!

Featured Replies

Hi,

My car was overheating yesterday in heavy traffic on the way home yesterday, so I put my heater on and it cooled down. Back at home I decided to pop the bonnet and to my surprise smoke began pouring out of the back of the radiator fan, and then a flame appeared!

Luckily quick thinking, I got a neighbour out who had some fire extinguishers and managed to put the fire out before it spread.

Has anyone ever heard of an Octavia doing this before? As I haven't!

To make matters worse the car had been in for a service and repair that day, it'd had new discs and pad, spark plugs and a new air filter. I personally think its a massive coincidence that it'd been in for repair and now this happened.

The garage would've been under the bonnet and could've dropped something into the fan making it short etc? I've just spoken to the garage now and they say it may have seized?! I drive about 15,000 miles a year, so I know when things aren't working etc.

What do people think, could the garage be at fault?

It would seem crazy to think otherwise.

i think its more likely the engine fan which rarely needs to come on this weather has been going flat out due to the car overheating subsequently its overheated and caught fire

I don't think the fan came on at all, I didn't hear it whilst sat in traffic.

I think something was caught in it, and it couldn't spin.

The garage that did the work now has it back and is replacing the fan as a goodwill gesture.

I really have to thank my lucky stars the only fire damage was to the fan itself.

The something caught in it could of been dropped by them after all its not like garages do things for free very often.

lucky escape tho

Very kind of them, they could have told you to go and do one.

May be some sort of admission of guilt, but who knows.

At least they are being good to you.:thumbup:

id also consider checking over other areas to make sure the heat hasnt caused any melted pipes etc.

Get them to check the cooling system as well the fan will only come on if the the coolant gets hot/too hot
