Vehicle speed sensor (dead speedo)

Hi, had the car's ECU read today and it has picked up a vehicle speed sensor fault, I have ordered a new one, What i want to know is has anyone had a dead speedo and fitted one? The rest of the dash is ok apart from the trip computer and the ECU light was lit, (oh and a dodgy fuel guage wavering around) Other than that no faults logged. I am worried after reading a few posts that i will fit it and it will still be not working:( thanks.
