The mysterious story of the hard ride and knocking noise when going over speed bumps.

Featured Replies

Had my car two weeks today, 170 Elegance and I've already covered over 1200 miles, from the outset the ride has been, shall we say firm. Was very jiggly, even noticebale on the motorway

I'd also noticed a knocking sound from the front left suspension when going over speed bumps.

Popped into my local dealer this morning and a technician came out to hear the noise, he took it back into the workshop and 10 minutes later reappeared with the boss with a couple of pieces of plastic in his hand. He asked me if I knew what they were...no prizes for guessing...they were the transit chocks. He had already phoned the supplying dealer, Parks in Scotland, Not sure if anything will happen...probably not.

The sticker I removed from the rear window said "Parks...Scotland's driving force" maybe they should add "when we remember to remove the transit chocks". Sure everyone makes mistakes but this must be pretty basic stuff during a PDI.

Any way the ride is transformed, infinitely better...it makes me wonder if the car Jonathan (jcblincs) test drove with 18s had them in.

Definitely possible, makes you wonder how often it happens.

i did wonder if my car had these in but i checked and cant see anything - presumably they are pretty obvious ? I am guessing they are inserted between the coils of the springs and if so then they woudl be pretty easy to spot ?

Yes they do fit around the springs, not sure how obvious they would be without the car up on a ramp.

i will be gettign my new 16" wheels fitted soon so i will check when it is up on the ramps

I find it truly astonishing that this can happen.

I find it truly astonishing that this can happen and even more so that the technician didn't know what they were. I wouldn't go back there.

I read that as the technician was saying "guess what I just found still in your springs? The transport stops." rather than "Do you know what these are cos I don't?"

Ken, you're right (the technician did know what they were!), sorry if my English was poor on my first post.

Dan, if it had been me (in either role), I might well have said something similar myself!
