Interior lighting

Featured Replies

I'm trying to add lighting into my footwells to light up when I open a door or when the interior lights come on in the car. The only thing I don't know is which wires to wire the lights into.

Has anyone got a clue as to what I need to wire to to do this?

just a suggestion, why not wire them to a switch and put a switch in the glove box or in the dash just in case u get fedup off them?, but what i would do is try and trace the wires back from the interior light to the dash and find which one comes on when u open the door then, then work off them wires to a join were u can work with them. just an idea or if u want them of the door lights trace each one 2 each door or back to a switch,

just an idea hope this helps

I'd tap into the wire for the glovebox light, so they are on when the sidelights are on, but as Ian suggests mount a switch somewhere for it (maybe the blank plate between the ASR switch and the petrol cap release if you haven't got a heated seat switch there) so you can turn them on and off. And don't drive around with them on! ;)

Edit - theres a red/black wire which goes into the central convenience module from the door control modules and also goes to the interior light so that one might be a good bet to tap into if you want them to come on at the same time as the interior light

I'm going to tap into the feed to the door lights when I do mine, so the footwell lights for the relevant side only come on when that side door is open.

I have the lights in place for the driver's side but haven't yet traced the wiring.

i did have a look at the haynes wiring diags, but to no avail. I don't really want to pull out my inside light and roof inside to trace the wire.

Still would like the lights to come on when I open any door, or if I unlock the car etc. Because i also want to put in an extra light above the rear seats to help illuminate the back of the car too.

Nice walkthrough on where to solder to. How easy was it to get the headliner off to put the wires through?

When I put the rear lights into ours, I went from the main internal light switch.

I then used this feed when I put footwell neons in. No need for the use of relays for additional power, as I used LED's for the Neons, so not much power drain.

Need to go back to the car at lunch time, so will get some pics

I used some like in the picture - out of a golf accoding to the ebay seller, but subsequently another member sole some that looked identical from a passat.

I made a note in his sale post about the fact that the space between the handle at the rear is limited due to the metal part of the roof. I cut a template out of card and used a pin to poke though the head lining to check the size of the hole in to the "tube" along the side of the roof. There's anoth hole about an inch behind that allowed me access to get the wiring in.

I ran the wires between the two rear light arround the back of the car, just pushing up in to the head lining at the edge and then ran down the drivers side, again pushing up in to the edge of the headling. Once I was at the front of the car, it was easy to get to the interior light to pick up the wiring.

HTH

Oh, and i had to swap the grab handles front to back as the hook on the rear handle fouls the lights

After much ado and pulling at interior panels. Screwes everywhere, I have managed to trace the correct wires from the main iternal light down into the drivers side. Now just to chop the wires and add mine in for the well lights. Might solder directly to the main light for the feed to the rear like Robs. Now to find which is +pos and which is -neg. lol.

All four lights are in now and working. Wohoo. Looks good. Will post a pic soon. Also I am going to change all the interior lights to a cool blue colour. Makes it all uniformed then. Still not sure what to do about the rear yet. Whether to put a single bar light across the back of the roof or to put two seperate lights on the sides above the doors.
