Why have a switch above the clutch pedal?

Featured Replies

Today I have just put a new clutch pedal into my 105,000 mile Fabia TDI as the old one had broken due to a VAG fault that is well described here.

Anyway after installing the new (and hopefully improved) later plastic type pedal I re-fitted the clutch switch to finish the job.

This switch has got me wondering. What is the point of the switch on the clutch. Is it just so the number of clutch actions can be recorded by the ECU or is there some other adjustments that are made by the ECU depending on the clutch position?

There is probably some simple reason that i have overlooked but I would be interested to know.
