Problem with door/sensor

Featured Replies

Just got my VRS and only problem i am having is that the front doors aren't being recognized as being open.

So if i open car get in and drive the locks all self losk as if i never opened the door.

Also the door indicator on the dash doesn't say they are open and the interior light doesn't come on when you open the doors.

Any help would be great.

Welcome!

What you have is a common fault. You'll find the mk4 golf has the exact same problem as well.

Instead of having a conventional plunger type door switch, your car has a microswitch integrated into the door lock mechanism. These switches either wear out, lose connection or get dirty over time.

Mine gradually died over time, but was always intermittant. So I soaked the lock mechanism in WD40 a while back, and it gradually came back to life again. Now it works almost all the time!

I think a new lock mechanism is about £80, and changing it looks a bit fiddly, so I'm happy to live with it. I've gotten into the habit of opening a rear door first and putting my coat in the back, stopping it from auto-locking. Or just putting the key straight into the ignition once I've unlocked the car.

It's really common, so do a search for 'lock mechanism' etc if you want more info.

I had to change the door lock in my Golf for the same reason. It's alot of work to change it...

If you are brave you can change the micro switch in the door latch mechanism. I am waiting for a spare day to attempt this, I purchased the micro switches ready to start.
