EBC red stuff - any good?

Featured Replies

Currently using Skoda OE front disks, with Mintex Xtreme pads. Which have been great, but it's time to change the discs now.

GSF are offering either Zimmerman or Brembo plain discs, both at £97.75 inc. vat for the pair. So I'll probably take the Brembo's there.

They tell me they no longer have Mintex Xtremes left:(, but I can have some EBC pads.

So basically, anyone using Red Stuff, and what do you think? I don't want to end up with a pad that is worse than the Mintex Xtremes.

I need a 'fast road' pad that can take some abuse on the Autobahn (slamming on at 130mph and not instantly wimping out like the OE pads) and occasional Nurburgring trip, but won't be a pain day to day (no cold performance and lots of squeal). It's a lot to ask I know!

Merci

Red stuff are good, but 130mph braking perhaps Yellow Stuff might be better suited?

Bodge

I put EBC Reds in my Saab, specifically for the Nurburgring...............I wouldn't recommend them:thumbdwn:. No noticable improvement on standard pads and faded without too much provocation. Really couldn't put any trust in them on the Ring.

Ferodo DS???? is the way to go, but can't remember the code.....is it DS2500?

Cheers

Lance

As Lance says; Red Stuff is rubbish, particularly since it's supposed to be a competition compound! If you can't get the Mintex, can you still get Pagid Fast Road, which is the same TGD Friction compound in a different box? Or Ferodo DS2500.

I'll ask about the Pagid fast road pads, cheers for the heads up there Ken.

I'll also see if I can find any Ferrodo dealers locally (Huddersfield).

Thanks a lot for the advice guys

Mintex = great, Ferodo = better but pricey.

EBC stuff is, as a general overview, Utter Junk. Green's crumble, Red's fade and don't give much increase in power but can also squeal badly from cold. Yellow's are good but take a lot to get good heat into them so from cold aren't particularly good (or for those emergency brakes on the motorway!) and need a heavy car to really work them properly unless you're in a light but very high powered car on track. Even for fast road I have foudn that they're spectacularly uninspiring. Oh, and every EBC pad I have used/tried/seen manages to eat discs for breakfast. By far and away my preferred pad choice is the DS2500, even if it is pricey.

Standard Pagid pads (T1154) are £42.50 + vat from GSF

Or uprated Pagid:

Skoda Octavia racing brake pads from Pagid.

RS4-2 (blue) or RS4-4 (orange), are £179.71 inc. vat!!

No way I'm spending that!

The hunt continues....

demon tweeks on the net may have ferrodo in stock, otherwise call people like jabba, awesome gti etc as they usually stock them.

Or Larkspeed for someplace nearish (Leeds).

Anyone recommend Tarox Strada pads? I see Awesome sell them and they arn't a bad price.

Ian

I had ebc red's in my Skyline and thought i had put them in back to front  utter cr**

Try looking for a company called 'compbrake' their a dot co dot uk address and very reasonable.

Tarox pads aledgedly work better with Tarox discs; I've heard tales (no evidence) that Tarox use a different alloy to the normal in discs, and their pads are specifically formulated to work with that alloy.
