Turbo to intercooler pipe wearing through!!

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

This is the first time in a while I have posted on here, but it's because I've just done my first DIY service on this car at 80k and found something that might be of interest to anyone having boost/ power problems or unexplained turbo noises.

While the car was up on the ramps, I was having a poke around underneath and I noticed that the rubber pipe coming out of the turbo into the intercooler was quite close to the sharp edge of a boss on the engine. I moved it away, got the lamp on it and was surprised to find that there is no restraint on this pipe and yet engine movement has obviously caused quite a deep wear in it!

I'm sure that given time this could easily have worn through and caused power loss, fault codes etc. but given that the damage is not obvious until you move the pipe, it could easily be missed if you were searching for a leak in the system joints.

For now I have made up a metal restraint that just pulls the pipe away a bit. I did take a couple of pics while I was under there if anyone is interested.

For observation, many of my 80k miles were on the motorway where there would not be too much engine movement but I'm guessing that if I had done lots of stop start/ aggressive driving then this wear could have happened quicker.

Is this one to look out for or just a one off? It would be terrible if people thought they needed a new turbo because of something like this!!

Worth posting up the pics if you don't mind :)

If it were to wear through totally, the errors would come up for sure though.

OK, here are the pics from under the car showing how the pipe from turbo to intercooler was rubbing on one of the production bosses on the block.

The restraint I made hooks into a bracket with a hole in it. This is already in place. If anyone knows a reason not to do this, please let me know!

Sorry if the pics are bad- first time uploading! will do again if needed

Thanks

Thanks dfullb

Maybe the tech guys would just grind the edge off the boss instead!

Would be interested to know if this is a common thing on PD Fabias though.

Any one else under these cars fancy taking a look?
