Correct Oil Weight

Featured Replies

Hey people

First time posting on this list, all the way from sunny Trinidad & Tobago!

A co-worker and I each bought Octavia 1.6 Ambiente automatics last November.

My car just passed the 5000 km mark recently, and I took it in for the first service as recommended by the dealer here on the island. I was checking the invoice today and realised that they filled my car with Mobil 1 Syntec, 15W50!!!!

Is this normal at all? I thought the recommended oil was 10W30. I always thought you only put in SAE 50 oil in an older engine (over 100,000 kms) with all the internal tolerances opened up.

It is hot here year-round - daily temperatures are usually 28 to 32 degrees, but does this justify using 15W50 in a practically BRAND NEW engine with 5000 kms?

Let me know your thoughts!

Francis

The climate on Trinidad & Tobago must be a lot different from here in northern Europe (but it sounds nice :D )

Octavias can be set for fixed or variable ("longlife") service intervals; even on fixed service the first service here in the UK - even from new - is at 10,000 miles (15,000 km).

I wouldn't expect fully synthetic oils (I'm guessing that Mobil Syntec falls in this category) to be used except for longlife servicing, where the car doesn't have to be serviced until around 2 years/ 20,000 miles.

Oh, BTW - Welcome to Briskoda

My real question is whether they should have used SAE 50 weight oil in my car instead of SAE 30 weight. SAE 50 is a heavier, thicker oil than SAE 30.

That oil is to THICK. That people at your dealer dont know what they are doing.

That Oil also does not meet VW specification.

My best advice is drain the oil and put new Synthetich oil like 10W-30, 5w-30 or 0w-30

In Europe, Skoda recomend 0w-30 Synthetic for a long term use and the change oil is every 30,000 kilometerswith this oil.

I am using Castrol 0w-30 synthetic recomended by my Skoda Dealer here in Panama Central Ameica were the temperature is very HOT and I change the oil every 6,000 kilometer because that is what the Skoda warranty demand.

But guess what? I bought myself the oil and pay US$35.00 for 6 quarts of Castrol 0w-30 Synthetic oil and US$25.00 at Skoda for the Filter and maintenance.

I Bought the oil myself to be sure that they dont put an inferior oil as happend to you.

Good luck

On occasion I have been known to use 10-60 in mine, if I have a bunch of track days / Ring trips in the offing.

Hi and Welcome!

was wondering when someone from T&T would turn up; saw a few Skoda's in Trinidad while I was there during Christimas '01 (my wife is from Trinidad).

Actually I only saw one Octavia h/b in San Fernando high street but I here that the Fabias are quite popular. Seen a few Felcias around Port of Spain.

Isn't it great that Briskoda is spanning the World; I'm actually off to Malaysia and Singapore in November (I could really do with a holiday now though) so I might see Skoda or 2 there as well.

Cheers.

Adrian.

Here at Colombia (South America) the Skoda dealer uses fixed 10000km service intervals and for the 1.8T Octavias the recommended oil is Mobil 1 15W-50 (don

In Europe, for the 1.8T on variable service intervals (where a higher performance oil is required than for fixed service intervals), Skoda specify a fully synthetic 0W-30 oil meeting specification VW 503 00. I am not an automotive engineer, but I don't see why that oil shouldn't be suitable for cars in warmer climates given that it and similar oils are recommended for turbo-engined cars where oil temperatures can be significantly higher than in normally aspirated cars. A search on the web for 'VW 503 00' should get you a list of suitable oils available in your part of the hemisphere.
