AP coilover fitted

Featured Replies

Other then that like you say it's agreat setup just the height is a little high, do you think the poly top mounts will make it harsher? Cheers.

I would say no, as the poly top mount is just a better material than the standard an therefore can be made slightly shorter. So the benefit is a reduced height of 10mm without an notice to comfort and handling. In fact handling maybe better as lower center of gravity.:)

Well i think after today i may ask for a refund on the AP's as not fit for purpose.

Had a squeak on the front since they were fitted and the ride quality is poor on the front and very bouncy. I raised the front 15mm from bottom so lowered 35mm of the 50mm stated.

Looking at the suspension when the car is on the ground the front helper springs are fully compressed and the squeak is actualy the bump stop being compressed. If you push down on the front when car is stationary you can see the bump stop being compressed so this is the reason for the bouncy ride as just using the bump stops.

To get the suspension of the bump stop it has to be raised another 15mm to give a ride i would class as ok which is 5mm higher than the standard VRS ride height.

I only went for the AP as the KW v1 i had before were very good but i would off bean better getting a cheap set off ebay.

Will be giving Sarah a call on monday to see what can be sorted out.

Good luck mate hope you get it sorted. Shame as the original stance was superb.

P.S what intercooler do you have.

Intercooler is a universal one off ebay connected to a set of abd pipework.

I spoke to the AP rep a ultimate dubs and he said they can change things out on the kits but whats the point of buying a 50mm coilover kit when it's on the bump stops at 35mm.

So you going to get rid of the ap's? I've noticed this year is v1's have gone up alot in price. Maybe go for weitec's?

Do the octavia kits have helper springs then?

On the Fabia AP kits there is just one spring on the front that sits on a rotating perch.

Yep they have a main spring and helper spring.

Got to see what happens on monday but not at all impressed with the AP's. Why say it lowers 50mm when if you lower it that far it's like driving a car with no shocks. When i went to ultimate dubs a friend text me to say the car was bouncing all over the place as he was following me. I have replaced the lower wishbones and ARB bush's as the squeak sounded like it was there but the amount it's cost me i could of purchased the Weitec's

The passat estate has TAtechnix coilovers that cost £200 and dropped over 80mm and drives spot on.

It does sound a little suspect that the AP kit you have may well be for another car. Maybe Golf,Seat etc. Have you had it confirmed the part number is correct. What is the part number?.

also the weitecs have gone up too. its the Euro - £ rate.

I got the weitecs and they are spot on. mind I am gonna check about the bumpstops lol ill post the result on monday when I get home

I thought the AP ones were sposed to be good?

I have got to give them the individual part numbers on the shock body and both springs for each side to confirm if the correct parts have been fitted.

Quite tempted just to sell the car now and go back to another mk2 golf.

What? no way she is stunnin mate.

youll get over this little problem then youll love the car to bits, I went thru a really bad patch when having remap probs and was gonna go back to a mk4 astra GSi. glad I didnt thou!

Doing a search for AP coilovers there are a number of people having to cut the bump stops down to run them low to stop the bouncing.

Been after a mint mk2 golf shell ever since i put a 20v in my last one but want to build a charged vr6 this time.

Well i had the front suspension off a couple of times today to investigate further.

There is a single bump stop with the blue crap quard on it. Above the bump stop is two black nylon type spacers of 15mm. I have tried running with both of the spacers removed both sides and no squeak and rides a lot better but on bumpy roads can bottom out often. Then placed one of the spacers in a tried again. Did not bottom out as often but the bounce was back but not as bad.

No matter on which setup i have tried apart from running in higher than the standard vrs ride height the ride is poor and over speed bumps dont go there.

mmm

see I thought they are the same as the weitec hicon GT??

and I got them and if you look at my pics its fairly low. mine doesnt feel like its hittin the stops but when i get her stripped for cleaning ill look properly. my ride is actually good.

billy

Thanks for that, nearly bought some but after reading this think i won't be buying the AP's. oh btw i saw your car at ultimate dubs a few weeks back! lol

  • 3 years later...

APs only offer 25mm lowering on a vrs is that it!!! ffs!

what a lot of money for not alot of anything!! Think i may have to cancel my order of these. *now very peeved

One of the nicest silver vRS's ive seen. LOVE IT!

Im torn between weitecs and kw v1 basics :o

Im torn between weitecs and kw v1 basics :o

basily the same kit buddy..

only difference is the KW's are plated so do not corrode as much as Weitecs which is why they are dearer.

I though kw's had better internals?

weitecs are a budget brand of KW

as Bowders1 says basically indentical

The weitec stuff just doesn't go through the complete KW manufacturing process.

KW postal address:

Aspachweg 14

74427 Fichtenberg

Weitec postal address:

Aspachweg 14 + D-74427 Fichtenberg

AP are made by KW as well but sold by a UK distributor. Basically AP are their budget coilies, Weitec GT's and TX's are the mid-range and the top end stuff is the KW V1, V2 and V3s.

I though kw's had better internals?

not on the basic coilovers like V1's , even Weitecs now come with the same spring and colour as KW. The internal's are changed when you start V2, V3 and sport versions.
