Cruise control

Featured Replies

Hey guys.

Well with my pending trip to the Isle of Skye next month I don't fancy holding my foot on the throttle the whole bleeding way so I've been looking into retrofitting cruise control.

There are proper kits that have all the functions like resume and increase decrease speed but they would need me to get an electronic servo, speed sensor (as there is no electrical speed signal on the felly) and these will just bump the price up to silly amounts.

I have come accross this:

Eagle Economic, Conrad Anderson UK, Cruise Control, Speed Control

It basically "locks" the throttle cable in the current position and can then be fine tuned to increase/decrease speed.

It has a safety cut-off if the brake pedal is pressed.

What are you're thoughts on it if any guys?

Will only set me back £40 as well which is worth it for this trip alone I think!

a brick?

Haha!

Although I'm sure that would work... I think there are some practical issues to work out of that plan...

i find that once calibrated correctly, my size 14 boot usually does the trick

Lol... Yeh I can usually wedge my size 14 in place and keep a steady speed but my foot gets tired after a while and this seems like a good compromise to be able to just hold the throttle at a certain position without spending a fortune on a proper kit.

Best I can do really with a car that never had the option of cruise control.

i wouldn't touch that thing with a barge pole phil, looks a bit naff

Me too,Ive never known a cheap retro fit work properly yet, better of stopping every couple of hours and letting footsy wootsy have a rest . did oxford to dundee a few years ago, and found it was my back that ached more than my feet

Well, I can do Skye to York driving "properly" (ok not in a Felly, but I've done it in a ZX 1.4). Trust me when I say that, once you're North of Glasgow, cruise control becomes useless. You'd need to reset it about every 20 seconds most of the way!

Also, going through and out of Glasgow I'd recommend this route:-

M74 N onto M73 N, onto M8 W through Glasgow to M/A898 over the Erskine Bridge onto A82(T) W. Stay on the A82 until turning off onto the A87 at Invergarry, and stay on the A87 til you get to Skye!

Thanks.

And yeh I realise that... Unless of course it was proper cruise control with an auto box etc.

It's more for the motorway of course.

Will dig around and see if there are any reviews or other people using this on any forums etc.

Its not meant to be anything fancy hence why it looks basic and "naff" and of course is nothing like proper cruise control.

Thanks

Phil

I use the Bowes Moor route (A66), so the longest flatish stretch on the whole route is York to Scotch Corner!

Looks like an arming device for a bomb!!!

didn't land rover solve this problem about 50 years ago by fitting a fixable hand operated throttle

  • Author

Lol... yes. I believe it was fitted to a lot of the Landy's so they could lock the throttle open for going up/down steep slippery bits!

Didn't have any safety cut-outs though I don't think so probably not advisable for road use!

IIRC, By law all cruise control systems have to disengage by pressing the footbrake. On hydraulic systems there should be a pressure switch and a secondary circuit connected to the brake lamps

  • Author

Yes you are probably right... It makes sense to me.

Well this one does exactly that!

Yes have seen the waeco units.

I would need an electronic servo unit though due to it being a small engine (not enough vaccum) and it is expensive as it is.

I would also need to do things like stick magnetic sensors on a drive shaft for the speed sensor as the felicia doesn't have an electronic speed signal (cable driven speedo).

Thats why I was considering this as I don't want anything fancy and just something to take the strain off my leg from time to time. And it's cheap!

Phil

Looks **** and I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole.

"Won't cut out if you have a brake switch fault" suggests to me that it uses the brake light circuit, to open a relay and switch it open.
