Gyp's "Two-Piece Not Quite So Variable Boot Floor" build

Featured Replies

OK, slightly premature as I've not exactly started it as yet, however this is here as a placeholder to make sure I get it done and done quickly. i don't want this project to hang around too long!

The plan for the Two-Piece Not Quite So Variable Boot Floor is to have two pieces of wood that form the raised boot floor, with a join betwixt the two roughly half way back. Each piece of which can be lifted out if required, but the expectation is that the rear most section would be put in last/lifted out first.

So far I've bought...

the board for the new boot floor from B&Q and had it cut to size - 15mm OSB 2 board, 610mm deep for the forward section and 540mm for the rearward and both 1 metre wide. £21.83 all in.

the carpet, carpet glue and lifting handle from Amazon

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ZA5VIRE £9.98 + £4.99

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01DIRB7OO £6.69

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01B4WUXO0 £6.99

That's £50.48 so far

I reckon one of these at £3.91,

cut into sections and screwed to the underside of the OSB will give me the right height above the existing deck. If my measurements are right, the board should sit just above the lip on the tailpiece, and be slightly lower than the top of the lip. I'm intending to position the support battens on the front piece to rest against the front of the boot floor such that when both floor pieces are in place, the floor should not move about.

Ignoring the cost of the screws and staples that I've got in the garage already, I'm expecting my TPNQSVBF to set me back just under £55 and a couple of hours of shaping, drilling, screwing, glueing and cursing. Ideally less time that it took to set up Skoda Connect and get that working.

Well that's the theory anyway.

I'll report back on progress (or go very quiet and hide in a corner if it all goes wrong). Whatever, nothing will happen before Wednesday when I get my B&Q discount ;-)

@Gyp Very best of luck with your plans!

if you'd gone to your local timber merchant / DIY shop your timber cost would have more than halved....B&Q are  VERY expensive!

I completely agree, however B&Q is very convenient for me and the highly-rated local independent is about 8 miles away and far from conveniently located.

Next step...

Rearmost edge shaped having used boot liner as a template and (rather chunky) risers screwed in place.

Test fit and mark around the lifter-upper

Bit of carpet will cover the wobbly bits - basically OK

Not the most elegant bit of wood butchery

And this is where this evening finished

The carpet is glued but not wrapped round and stapled as I'm yet to discover where the missus has hidden the upholstery stapler.

I've also test fitted the front piece and it's a little snug on the sides and will be snugger once carpeted. I'm not too concerned about this at the moment as that should mean that everything stays in place without further fixings.

If I can find the stapler, I'll carry on tomorrow

Stapler found.

Rear section complete.

It's not perfect, but as I keep reminding myself, it's probably about £1000 cheaper than retrofitting an OEM one.

Front section tomorrow (depending on the weather)

Forward piece constructed.

...and carpeted

I should have done a test fit before putting on the carpet as it turns out that my side batons aren't quite right.

All being well I can saw a couple of inches off without damaging anything.

But that's a job for tomorrow as I don't think the neighbours would appreciate me sawing in the evening.

(more accurately, it's a bit cold out)

Good work that man! Looking forward to the final result!

Right now, rain and a rookie error stops play.

The cross piece right at the front is about 1/2" too far forward. Stupidly I didn't check it prior to gluing down the carpet.

Not sure if I'll be able to resolve without it looking terrible. Worst case I'll re-do the board as it's the easy one

Enjoying the updates, but sorry to hear about the hitch. If it's any consolation, it would have been long before the point you're at where I would have screwed up. And I would have screwed it up far more effectively, probably involving an over-cut or under-cut of the board by at least an inch. And in a totally irregular shape.

You're doing a great job from what I can see.

Whack the front piece off with a big hammer, with luck it should come off cleanly. Use screws, can always be unscrewed and repositioned!

Tempting though it is I'll swerve the opportunity for a crude joke...

The baton is screwed. The carpet is glued over the screws.

To get to the screws I need to peel back the carpet and I'm not sure it'll sit properly afterwards.

If it was simply a case of whacking off my wood I'd have had it off and shoved it in the other place last night.

Ah, I tried but I failed.

Can you feel the screws through the carpet?

If so, cut a cross over the screw to gain access. As long as you use a nice sharp knife it should be invisible once glued back down and the edges rubbed over.

I'll try unscrewing without pulling back the carpet and see how I get on. I can then reattach with brackets rather than screwing through the board.

Looking good - did you manage to sort the cross piece out?

Not yet as we were away for the weekend. I suspect I'll finish it at the weekend now

Now you know why the Skoda OE part is so expensive, it takes 3 czech people 4½ weeks to make and fettle each one!

Front section part the second

Unusually for me I had a ha'porth of tar moment and decided to shell out another tenner or so on a new front section rather than fanny about with trying to get the carpet right again.

Pretty much as before except the side battens are now chamfered, moved slightly back and the cross piece is alighned

And it fits as it should

I did check with the part-dismembered previous panel and conveniently the whole thing fits snugly between the back of the rear seats and the raised boot lip so it shouldn't slide about.

I have done the first fit of the carpet and will complete that tomorrow night.

All that will be left then is to something to stop the catch making a noise over bumps (perhaps something sticky), give the hole thing a good vacuum and then happily place my tartan travel rug in its new home :-)

Assuming Mr Cockup doesn't come to town, I'll put up the final photos in a few days

Nice work

Tesa tape for the handle recess… works well for vibrating speaker grills and other squeaky interior bits too.

Is that different to straight forward electrical tape?

Yup, it’s loom tape… more cloth than plastic.

You've done pretty well if you have got it right on the second go. I'm impressed!

I think I'm done.

The carpet is glued down.

I've done a better job of wrapping and gluing the (new) front piece than I have of the back but it should be fine. It's all drying in the house tonight and will go in the car tomorrow. As the edges are glued, and it's a snug fit between the sides of the front piece and the boot sides, i didn't want any glue seeping through.

I'm not totally happy with the lifting ring (not quite straight) but it'll do until I come up with a better solution.

Assuming it fits fine tomorrow I'll take a final couple of photos in the car and job done! If not, then I'll take it to the tip, delete the thread and pretend it never happened :-)

Spoken like a true perfectionist. Glad you found your staple gun. I envy your d.i.y. skills.

Frustratingly I found the longer staples just after I finished and that would have made the corners so much easier!
