1.4 TSi - Perky or Flat

Featured Replies

I'm starting to review my next car options.

I currently drive a co. car TDi vRS but am considering taking a cheaper car, maybe through a private lease to free up some money so that we can replace my wife's car and get something really nice :D

So, the 14. TSi Elegance ticks a lot of boxes but is it just too slow?

If any dealers reading want to quote me a 20k p.a. lease on a 3+35 basis, feel free to PM me!

Steve,

a guy I work with has just got an A3 with that engine and he loves it :)

Tried it in the new Golf (122bhp) and loved it - superb unit, smooth & torquey. Don't read too much into those 0-60 figures, in the real world those torque figures of 200Nm from 1500rpm to 4000rpm speak volumes.

Do not think you'll find a Octy demonstrator as yet, so try it in the Golf, either manual or DSG.

Just read an Autocar review of this engine in the Golf and they said the same - good torque curve. Coming from an oil burner, that sounds good - with a few more revs to play with at the top of the range!

I just hope the lease rates are sensible.

Come on dealers - white, sports suspension and 17" alloys, Maxidot and maybe a MDI ;)

How annoying!

The build your own feature on the web site doesn't have all the options that the brochure does!

Steve

Not tried an Octavia with that engine, but a mate had the 1.4TSi 170bhp Golf GT as a hire car and it was mighty impressive.

But that engine has 50bhp more than this one!

That greyed out options section is no more - you can now select it.

The factory fitted multi function steering wheel includes Maxi-dot plus its control - 4 spoke wheel on the manual and 3 spoke inc. paddle shift on the DSG.

Tried this engine the other day in a Golf MkV 7 speed DSG and Golf MkVI manual. Engine seemed great. Both manual and DSG were fine, didn't feel slow at all.

OK, so no vRS, but plenty fast enough for most situations I'd say.

And a super charger

And a super charger

As the S/C boosts the pressure up until the turbo spins, is can't be just the the turbo that gives the extra 50bhp...can it?:D

So, what other differences are there to the engine?

Withams in Walton on Thames have a manual 1.4TSI to test drive

At last they are starting to appear in RHD then. Unfortunately, W.O.T. is a bit too far away for me nowadays - lived in Sussex up until 8 years ago. I'm sure they will become generally more available as demos, including the DSG, over the next few weeks.

Do you intend giving the Withams manual an assessment?

They also do a 140 bhp version of the twincharger engine, there are also variants above 170bhp, just not in production at the moment.

The 1.4 turbo unit is quite similar, it doesnt run an intercooler though, it has a charge cooler built into the inlet manifold that has its own cooling system and pump.

I didn't like the 1.4 TSI's manual 'box. It's a bit clunky, I even misshifted once.

That motor linked to the DSG certainly suited the new Golf, hopefully it will be the same story with the slightly heavier Octy.

Out of interest where did you locate the 1.4 TSi manual to try?

Today i had the chance of driving this car and here i am sharing my commends.

Well this car was a comby (elegance) equipped with the rough package option. (20mm higher suspension and some other staff for adventure lovers).

The power of the car was nice. I thought i was in a 1.8 car all the time. The gear changing was smooth and fast and i noticed that i was doing 60 km/h with the 7th gear.. This means fuel economy isn't it?

Driving was nice and the car felt stable at all times. The only thing i didn't enjoyed was the noise. I don't mean the engine noise, but the road noise coming from the wheels. (I don't know how to explain it). The dealer told me that this is true but it is caused because of the rough package. The salon is a different car with the normal suspensions and no noise is coming from the car.

I have also had a test drive with the superb 1.4 tsi (manual) elegance version. I loved it and i can tell that it is a powerful car suited for Cyprus conditions and distances. No mistake in the making of this car in my opinion.

I am going to buy the superb because of the space, the money, the power and the beauty. If i didn't have the money i would buy the octavia as it is a great car with a powerfull engine (manual and auto).

I had the chance to drive the 1.4 TSI at Withams. It was very impressive: refined and responsive. As said elsewhere, the wide torque band is the thing. A very complete car, with no sense of lacking pwer. More of a junior 1.8T than an improved1.6. Apparently there are no DSG versions around to drive just yet

That's nice to know, it certainly suited that Golf I tried and I could see no reason that the Octy would be any the worse for it with that motor. If the Octy DSG is as good as that Golf, then that would be the icing on the cake. Mine has been on order for 2.5 weeks now and I'm still waiting for the build date, the overall delivery time was quoted at 8 to 12 weeks.

I have got a Mk6 golf on hire at the moment in Hamburg with the 1.4TSI in it, and I am really surprised by it, smooth, refined and actually pretty 'torquey' to drive. I am guessing it's the 160bhp unit fitted to the new Scirocco as there is not a lot to go on other than a TSibadge on the boot.

Lovely engine after a day of living with it, seems to be sipping the unleaded as well which is a good thing. Hmmmmmmmmm anyone wanna buy a roomster ;)

As well as the Octavia, that engine would really suit the Roomster & Fabia.

Indeed, it would be a great engine for the mythical Fabia 2 vRS. Back on topic, I was blinded by the old phrase of 'there ain#t no replacement for cubes' but this on face value is a real peach of a motor.

Be scarey near the end of the warranty period though, with both a Turbo and a Supercharger to go tits up and I bet it's a remappers nightmare.

As a general purpose motor in an Octy, I reckon it would be a great balance of price / performance without having to revert to that slimy smelly stuff that I have to force feed the Roomster :)

I think the 'there is no replacement for cubic inches' thing is getting more and more difficult to justify with the fuel useage and emissions requirements as they are these days. That said I love the sound of a V8 :D

Small, efficient engines are very impressive these days, and they are so dynamic now, even a 1.2 can be pretty nippy in real life. Of course a similarly developed bigger engine will be 'better' but still, at least it is viable now :D

I've just had a test drive of an Octavia 1.4TSI (manual) and it was plenty perky enough for me. Local dealer (Mitchells, Chester) finally got one in this week. It was supposed to be a demonstrator, although it's now been sold so won't be there for long.

I'd already tried the engine in a Golf, but I was impressed by how smooth it was, decent acceleration even from low revs, quiet enough... no complaints from me.

Well I was happy enough to go ahead and order one (DSG Elegance Estate). So after all the time carefully considering this purchase I have the wait for it to arrive....

Pleased and not surprised to hear of your positive comments.

Congratulations on your purchase and I can sympathise with you on the waiting period - but like all good things .....

My car is scheduled for build during week 17 so, with my optimist's cap on & fingers crossed, it looks like around mid May for me.
