Warning light issue...again !

Featured Replies

On the last few cold mornings when I have started my Octavia, the red 'thermometer' type warning light continues to flash. If I drive a few yards onto the flat & turn the engine off & on, it disappears. I know it has something to do with the Coolant level or could it be the level of antifreeze in there? Initially I suspected it was maybe just due to the slope of my drive (slopes down from drivers side) & the sensor(s) in the bottle?

The last time it happened (I was offshore & my wife was using the car), I spoke with the dealer they said, "oh don't worry about it" but I am now getting concerned as it's happening more often...any comments.

FYI - it's a petrol VRS, reg'd Nov'07 with only 15k on the clock? & on variable servicing. The level in the tank looks ok to the naked eye.

The sensor is a pair of metal prongs that are immersed in the coolant, the warning light is activated when the electrical conductivity between the the two prongs through the coolant is reduced. This could be due to a low coolant level (parking on a slope could tip the coolant away from the prongs), or the prongs have got dirty, reducing their effectiveness.

You could put a little water in the tank to bring it up very slightly over the maximum level and if the problem continues, get to a dealer so that they can replace the tank under warranty.

This is a common problem on the Octavia I.
