Changing drive shaft oil seal

Featured Replies

Hey there folks.

While changing the oil today I noticed a fair amount of gear oil coming from the N/S oil seal on the gearbox.

I grabbed the parts (oil seal, plug washer and oil) and I'm gonna attempt it tomorrow.

Any tips or advice or any other bits I will need?

I know I don't have to remove the outer drive shaft etc and can just leave it attached to the hub according to the Haynes but don't really see how I release it to do so... Is it the nut near the bottom that seems to clamp the hub in place?

Thanks

Phil

what you would have to do is undo the pinch bolt that holds the hub onto the ball joint, then you will need a long lever to lever(jack handle or broom handle) it off the ball joint, you might need an assistant to hold pull the hub outwards while you release it from the gearbox, you might need a crowbar to lever the inner cv joint away from the box as they can be quite stubborn to get out, and make sure you drain the gearbox oil before you start.

to get the old seal out of the gearbox use a flat bladed screwdriver and lever very carefully on the inside edge... make sure dont get any bits of the **** inside the box, when you put the new seal it use a large socket to drift it in that only applies pressure to the outside edge of the new seal, make sure it goes in square too.... if you have some copperslip, smear some round the inside where it meets the spline, this will stop it running dry.

Thanks.

Got it done ok!

Just removed the pinch bolt from the bottom of the hub and that gave me enough room to move the suspension strut to the side slightly and pull the shaft out.

Had a bit of a fiddly time getting it back in tough due to the circlip on the end and having to bend it back in so that it would click back in. But all sorted now and no more oil has leaked since doing it and having a 40 odd mile drive home.

Is it usual for these to leak only when the car is in motion? I suspect mine may be leaking.

I think so. It only seamed to leak after I had driven it. Suppose it depends how worn the seal is.

Didn't really take me too long and was a fairly easy job TBH.

Hi, does ànyone have the part no for the driveshaft géarbox oil seal? Or the name or dimensions. Ive found a differential seal by Corteco 12019597B, 55mm outer diameter, 40mm inner and 8mm high. Without taking it out its difficult to know if it is the right one.

Thanks
