Noise when changing gear or accelerating

Featured Replies

If I change gear or take my foot of the accelerator rapidly or put my foot down rapidly there is a noise, someone told me it might be something like the engine housing brushes or could the engine housing be loose??

sounds like an engine mounting starting to go or gone. My cars got a mount at the back of the block.

It stops the engine rocking backwards and forwards, sounds like this is whats wrong with yours!!

Could also be the console bushes split

How much and could my local garage do it?

Sounds like the lower gearbox mount is the likely culprit. Not "too" much hassle to swap. Maybe time to go for Jabba's ultra stiff one? ;) (edit: Just seen it's a 1.4 so not sure it has the same lower mount)

I'm broke and I'm selling it to my Dad when I go to Uni in September anyway so I may aswell leave it for him to do ;p

I'll think about puttin the stiff one in when I come out of uni in about 4 years with my first wages, if I don't decide to get an S3 that is ;p

For the cost of some silicone grease it may be worth lubing up the gearbox side engine mount with copius amounts of the stuff.

I had something very similar, everytime changing gear, over knocks in the road (funnily enough hardly ever over speed bumps) and when tapping the power on/off.

Greasing the gearbox mount had a bit of an affect for me, as did greasing the dogbone mount. It apparently fixes it for some people...

For me though I had a new gearbox side engine mount and dogbone mount... fitted for about £250 :( Seemed a tad pricey but it was a main dealer!

Grease the N/S gearbox mount and replace the dogbone IMO
