vrs charcoal filter breather pipe

Featured Replies

Hi

I changed the cam belt, tensioner, water pump etc yesterday on my 53 plate octy vrs.

All went well (although a bit tight for space for an HGV fitter), but when refitting the O/S wheel arch liner I found the 1/2" dia, charcoal filter breather pipe was catching on the wheel arch liner.

The breather pipe was slopping rearwards at about a 45 degree angle and the only way I could get the arch liner to fit was to push the end of the pipe towards the inner wing.

Now with the arch liner in place you can see about 1/2" of the open end of the breather pipe between the arch liner and inner wing.

The car runs fine, but is that OK ???

Also, does anyone know if the breather pipe is an exhaust or an inlet, or both ???

Thanks.

I'm afraid I can't answer your question but i changed my cambelt, tensioner pulley, idler roller and waterpump at the weekend. Came accross some quite awkward bits but I was going to ask what the charcoal filter does as I have no idea. After starting the engine for the first time it started ticking after a few seconds. I traced the ticking to this filter and then it went away and back to normal.

Any idea what it does?

Its supposed to tick on and off once the engine is warm to keep emmisions down.

It collects and stores petrol vapours from the sealed fuel tank and releases them into the inlet manifold via a purge valve/solenoid (the thing that ticks and makes our vrs's sound like a knackered Mk1 fiesta )

Agree about the awkward bits, the engine mounting brkt is a right pain.... the only time I could get enough room to get the thing out was when the tensioner and roller was removed and by then there was only the water pump left to change. And when putting it back on, no way could I not get a torque wrench onto the centre bolt.

:)
