Removing number plate screws :(

Featured Replies

Ok don't laugh, but I can't get the fudging number plate off!

Its held in by 2 screws that seem to be held in by super glue. My whole weight trying to turn it... heard 2 clicks and thats it. Screw driver kept slipping after that.

Its the right size bit as its nice and snug fitting. I can't get enough purchase with pliers...

any ideas?

tempted to snap the old number plate off then try and use pliers to get the screws out

Tried a pair of vice grips? If not just snap them off and get into it with the grips. Had to do that on a mates polo last week. :thumbdwn:

If the screws still have there little plastic caps on, they tend to make the screw sit a little proud so if you can pull them off and take all the plastic off aswell around and behind the screw head with a stanley knife (watch your fingers, etc) you can get some pliers on the screw and Bob's your Aunties live-in lover!

Done this numerous times working for Halfrauds when fitting new plates for people when the screws were seriously corroded! Worked every time!

HTH! ;)

Yeah - I've got a set of mini-molegrips for removing the screws that are corroded at my Halfords too! Also works everytime!

That's just what I was going to say. They can seize quite tight.

one of mine was rusted in, i had to remove the trim from the tailgate and use a spanner on the inside to prevent turning and a set of vice grips on the screw from the outside.

it was actually a damn nightmare to remove!!

Just drill the heads off then use mole grips to remove the rest after plenty of WD40 ect.

Won't wd40 have a bad affect on the paintwork?

No its jus a silicon oil and will wipe off.

Just use a drill bit that is bigger than the shaft of the screw and the head will fall off, quite often the heat from drilling the head off will loosen the screw.

WD40 doesn't have any silicone in it, says so on the tin so it can be used in bodyshops.

If its the rear ones....

Snap the plate off, rip the inserts out, weld the holes up, repaint the tailgate and stick the number plate back on.

Bit extreme maybe????

I bought some of these to get some screws out. I was surprised to find that they work fairly well, or did on my lawnmower. Can't be any worse than a drill.

Then you could grind them flush with a dremel and just stick the plate on as Lummox suggests.
