160k Superb... Worth it?

Featured Replies

Evening all,

A member of my family has an 06 plate 1.9TDi Elegance Superb auto with 160k on the clock. He's had it from new and it's had 'no expense spared' servicing all it's life, along with being washed practically every day (due to the nature of the work it's been doing). It's got an excellent spec (all round heated leather, sat nav etc) with a fair few options. When parked next to my 54 plate passat with 90k on the clock it puts the passat to shame.

In the near future the superb will be sold to make way for a new model, and I have been offered it for "whatever I can get for my passat". We have looked at the figures and it seems both vehicles are worth roughly the same, although the Superb is probably worth slightly more, I'm quite keen to take the car over as it really is a brilliant example and I have been thinking about an auto for some time now.

I'm concerned by the mileage... By the time I have run about in it for a while it's going to be getting on for 200,000 miles, which I have no doubt it will cover with ease, but by this point it would be near worthless so I would probably want to keep it for a good few years. So, what are the chances of say, another 100,000k on it's current mileage (260,000 miles) without major surgery, assuming the servicing is kept up to scratch?

If things were to start going horribly wrong, what's likely to go first? The gearbox?

Thanks in advance for any thoughts,

Phil.

On account you know its history, i would have no problem with the mileage at all.

Gearbox is probably the first thing that would need attention, followed by wheel bearings (if they have not been changed).

i have been in a 110 Octavia (taxi) with well over 250k on the clock and it would put most cars with a third it's mileage to shame.

The key thing to make them last is servicing them correctly (with the right oil) and on time.

I would agree - the only major question mark would be the gearbox. Given correct maintenance the 1.9PD is a very long lasting unit, as is the rest of the car if you address the weaknesses. (Which the dealers can't or won't - perhaps they are in denial).

If you can get the car for a knock-down price, change the transmission fluid and factor in the possibility of transmission replacement, I don't think 200k miles would be at all unreasonable for one of these cars.

That's one of the reasons why I bought one.

Just to add my 2p........

I bought my Superb, Comfort 1.9 PD TDI, with 86k on the clock knowing the owner and have owned it since with the car now on 155k, it has been a great car and I have been very impressed with it's consistent plodding along, touch wood..........

I service the car myself regularly and any problems get sorted but they are few and far between so IMHO if you know the history of the car your buying then you will have no worries..........:D
