Polish

Featured Replies

Got a few minor scuffs and scratches on the Octavia and wondered what you Detail Dudes recommended for polishing them out.

I have no intention of polishing the car all over just a few little areas where said offending marks are.

Thanks in advance :)

I'm no expert but in my limited experience I've found that a layer of polish alone will make your car nice and shiny but will actually show up any scratches or marks even more. I think you might be better advised to invest in a claybar to first work on the scratches and then polish over it.

Baker 21 might be able to help

Cheap simple and rather good, get the turtle wax colour magic with the chip stick. Get the right colour though. The more applications done over time the less apparent the marks as it softens the edges of the scuff.

Steve.

Autoglym Super Resin Polish, believe it or not, actually does a pretty good job of hiding small scuffs and scratches, if you put a fair old bit of elbow grease into it

A quick note following a previous post on this thread-don't get confused between polishes and waxes (manufacturers themselves often misuse the terms ). Put very generally, polishes = correction, waxes/sealants = protection. Plus clay bars are used for removing contaminants such as bird crap and tree sap; they don't do anything to scratches.

Hope this helps a bit :)

Autoglym and Turtle wax mentioned above are fine in their own rights but are essentially filler polishes, they will mask your scratches for a period of time untill you either wash it enough or it gradually falls out the small indents, to completly remove them you will need to take of an area of topcoat equal to the depth of the trough of the scratch.

This Is what you have (Assuming swirl type scratches):

Fillers like AG SRP and colourmagic do this

and eventually wear away

Cutting back with an abrasive polish, partial cut:

finish cut:

A widly available product, off halfords shelves is meguiars scratchX which will take a bit of elbow grease to get where you want but if its only localised then shouldnt be too bad. Just remember once you have cut back the topcoat to reapply a finishing product such as a wax or sealant to protect the open wound :D

Theres a good thread on hand swirl removal here: ** Swirl Removal By Hand - Test ** - Detailing World
