Has anyone done the Ambient light mod?

Featured Replies

As the title says, has anyone done it? Would like to see some pics as well as some more info. Is it hard to do? What are the parts needed? Are they expensive/hard to get hold of??

Cheers for any help

Excuse my ignorance but what is the ambient light mod?

a model of car, I don't remember which, has ambient lighting, the parts are compatible with the fabia.

I did this on a MKI Octavia:

Parts needed

2x red LED's (i used 3mm ones)

2x resistors (so each LED can take 12v)

length of wire (to go from interior light to the back of the light switch)

insulation tape

Tools needed:

Soldering iron,

solder

flux (not essential, but nice if you have it)

hot glue gun.

Multi-meter or test light. (to find the sidelight power and earth)

Screwdriver (to remove interior light)

Remove the interior light from the roof lining

Solder the resistor to the + side of the LED,

solder the wire to the resistor, the other end of the wire splice into the sidelight feed at the rear of the light switch (run the cable behind the pillar trim and roof lining)

solder the - side of the LED to an earth in the light unit.

Drill a hole for each LED in the map light area of the interior light, hot glue the LED in place.

Tape up all bare wires, refit interior light, job done.

Cost about £2, takes about an hour to do.

So what does the W8 part do that the normal one doesnt? Just those LED's?

Two red LED's and the buttons also have red lit symbols on them.

Don't forget even with the W8 light you are still going to need to supply a 12V feed that is controlled by the sidelights.

If it only adds two LED's i'll give it a miss!

This is a W8 light
