Check if the cover of the mirror in the sun shield is closed.

It was creaking in my car when was left open.

Why do so few people search this forum - this subject has been covered many times and cures abound

My November 2007 Octavia Estate has recently made a lot of creaking from what seems the doorframe/headlining. I mentioned it to my dealer at recent service aware that creaking door seals are a common porblem but he claimed he had never heard of it. I accept that it may have been covered many times before, but so many new subjects appear on the site, I have struggled to find information on how to resolve it.

The assistance of the forum would be great.

I’ve been battling with the dealer and Skoda Customer Services for months on this one. I have a Octavia II Estate which has always suffered from the creaking doors. After 5 visits to the dealer I eventually got the drivers side door seals replaced, which fixed the noise on that side. Because I took the advice of this forum and tried putting some silicone on the seals (dashboard cleaner) they don’t seem willing to replace the passenger side, as I’ve “modified the part”. The silicone did make a big improvement, but doesn’t last for more than a few weeks. I’ve since taken the car to another dealer, who cured the problem by putting their own grease (I presume some sort of silicon) on it! It has only been a week, but it is silent with the Skoda Grease on it. The mechanic said that he had noticed the noise on other Octavia Estates, but not saloons. It is strange how the mechanics in the dealers seem to be aware of the problem, but Skoda Customer services seem to have not heard about it. I would suggest that you contact Skoda Customer Services (08457 745745) and ask if it is a known problem with the Octavia Estates. If they say they have not heard of anyone else complaining about it, ask them to check my registration (RF08 HRX).

Here is the sort of uncaring, uninterested, response that you get from Skoda UK Customer Services. There is a warning in this for anyone who attempts to fix their creaking door seals by applying anything themselves as recommended in this forum, as Skoda will then consider that you will have modified the part and will no longer accept any claim under warranty. It’s strange that a dealer can apply some sort of grease in an attempt to make a fix, but they can’t advise me what to use.

My e-mail to Skoda UK Customer Services:

I am writing to keep you informed of the latest actions I have taken in an attempt to resolve the issue of the noisy door seals on my Skoda Octavia Estate.

To reiterate the history of the problem.

Visit 1 - 2nd December 2008 – Car to Capital Skoda - Newport, primarily because airbag light was on all the time, but mentioned the door noise. Was told they could not detect the noise.

Visit 2 - 5th December 2008 – Car returned to Capital Skoda to fix the airbag light issue. Again I mentioned the door, but they could still not identify a problem.

Visit 3 - 18th December 2008 – Returned to Capital Skoda specifically for the door noise. Was told there was no problem.

Visit 4 - 16th January 2009 – Arranged to take an engineer out at Capital Skoda so that I could help them identify the noise. The engineer agreed that there was an obvious noise and they agreed to change the door seals, but only one side at a time.

Visit 5 - 26 January 2009 – Took the car to Capital Skoda to get the drivers side seals replaced, but the wrong seals had been ordered.

Visit 6 - 12 February 2009 – returned to Capital Skoda again, this time the drivers door seals were replaced, which appears to have cured the noise on that side.

13th February 2009, I rang to arrange to get the passenger side seals replaced but was told to wait 4 weeks as Skoda may reject the warranty claim if I had another set changed straight away.

I have been told by Capital Skoda that because I attempted to alleviate the problem between visit 5 and 6 by putting some Interior Car cleaner on the seals I may have invalidated my warranty. In many telephone conversations with yourselves I was astonished to find that you agreed with Capital Skoda, seemingly ignoring the fact that the dealer had already agreed to replace the seals before I had put any cleaner on them.

Last week I contacted the Manager of Capitol Skoda and he returned my call assuring me that they would rectify the problem. As a week passed without hearing anything from them I decided to try another dealer, Griffin Mill of Pontypridd.

I was delighted with the attitude of the technician at Griffin Mill. He acknowledged the noise within the first 50 yards of the test drive, and confirmed that the noise was coming from the rear door seal within 3 minutes. I had only arranged to take the car in to demonstrate the noise , but the technician was helpful enough to try and rectify the problem. Within 10 minutes he had applied some sort of grease, I presume silicone, to the door seal and the noise was completely eliminated. The only noise now is a slight knocking from the rivers side, which had its seals replaced back on February 12th.

The technician said that he has noticed the noise on other Octavia estates, but never hatchbacks.

I find it astonishing that dealers have noticed the noise, yet the Customer Services department appear to be unaware of the issue.

While the passenger side doors are rattle free for the moment, I am sure it is only a matter of time before the grease wears off and the rattle returns. I will then need to make the 30 mile round trip back to Griffin Mill to get some more grease applied.

What I would like to know is:

(1) Do you have any Customer Service technicians that I can request to examine my car to decide that there is a fundamental problem with the door seals?

(2) Could you recommend a Skoda approved grease that I could purchase and apply myself to save the fuel returning the car to a dealer each time the seals need lubrication?

(3) Do Skoda Customer Services consider it acceptable that the door seals on a relatively new, £17000, car need to have grease applied to them in order to eliminate a noise?

Skoda Customer Services Response:

Thank you for your e-mails dated 1 and 11 May 2009, regarding the door seals on your Skoda Octavia, registration RF08 HRX.

I am sorry for the delay in responding to your enquiry and I would like to thank you for your patience during my investigation into the delayed repairs to your door seals. I was pleased to note however, your satisfaction with the assistance you received from our technician at Griffin Mill Garages.

Please be advised that whilst Skoda UK has measures in place to dispatch technicians to our retailers, these visits are for the express purpose of assisting with issues that the retailer has been unable to resolve. As your vehicle's issue has been diagnosed, a visit of this nature is not required.

I am not in a position to recommend any lubricant for use on the door seals of your vehicle. Furthermore I cannot advise you to complete the outstanding repair, as any this may lead to your Warranty being invalidated.

Should you have any further concerns regarding your vehicle, I must refer you back to your selling retailer to discuss your issues. If you have any other enquiries however, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I have to agree that Skoda UK customer care is pretty appalling. Goodness knows how they come out well in the JD Power surveys.

I would also take serious issue with the last sentence of their reply. You should not be referred back specifically to the 'selling dealer'. You can take your Skoda to ANY Skoda anywhere in Europe during the first 2 years of warranty - its a 2 year pan-European warranty backed by the factory and forms a contract between you and Skoda. Take your car to the dealer that is best able to fix it. No dealer can turn you away or refuse repair or warranty, that's part of their franchise obligation and is backed by EU Block Exemption legislation.

Further to the above I notice that the door seals do squeak a bit on my 2008 vRS saloon (I think others have had this problem on saloons too).

I rubbed a bit of silicone grease around the seals (a very very tiny amount is needed) and its more or less cured the problem.

DO NOT use mineral oil grease or 'petroleum jelly' - these will attack the rubber. Use a proper silicone grease like Servisol (made by Ambersol) or Molykote 111. You can buy these from electrical factors or some plumbers merchants, or even eBay. Less than £5 and will save you all the aggro of the dealer and Skoda UK.

I’ve had the same problem with my ’08 Elegance Estate, you can see some of my comments here:

http://briskoda.net/octavia-ii/door-trim-squeak/140862/

I have since had all of the door seals changed, after I complained to the Society Of Motor Manufactures and Traders, and the noise is cured.

I would try the dealer, if they won’t do anything try Skoda Customer Services. Again, if they say they’ve never heard of it they are lying. If you still don’t get anywhere go to the SMMT website and make a formal complaint as I did.

Generally I found that the noise was not so bad on the wet days as I assumed the dampness acted as a lubricant.

I’m amazed that the dealers still aren’t aware of this as a common problem on the estates
