Instrument panel not working

1999 TDi. All the gauges in the instrument panel have stopped working. Miles and trip still reading and computor readouts are ok. Tacho, temp, fuel and speedo work for a moment as the engine is started (when starter is engaged) then, as key is released go to zero. Anyone any ideas. My thoughts are ignition switch. I haven`t had a look yet as it only happened an hour ago (18.30). I seem to remember that VWs had a problem with ign. switch and I wondered if Skoda have inherited the problem.
