Thinking of buying Octavia 2.0L PD 140...

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

Just joined the forum! Good to see so many posts here! I would like some 'real world' advice from anyone who can help...

I am thinking buying a 2005 or 2006 Octavia 2.0L PD 140bhp... but am also thinking about the 1.9L PD 105bhp. Does anyone know whether the extra 35bhp actually gives any real performance gains? Is the 2.0L engine as reliable as the 1.9L? I have driven a 1.9L and thought that was OK, but I do like the extra power if I can get it!

I like the Elegance version... what is the standard car stereo like? The car seems to have 8 speakers, but are they any good?

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards,

Peter.

Bump! Anyone got any thoughts?

I think your Elegance would have the same stereo as my car (you might want to double-check this though), if this is the case then I think it's a very decent stereo for an OEM model. I think you could do a lot worse, for OEM...

The extra 35bhp definately gives a performance gain, of course it does! 2 secs less to 60mph, if you care about that kind of thing.

It also has more torque, 70Nm.

That said mind, the 1.9 has a fair share of torque too, enough to pull a caravan, so I've read on this forum.

As for reliability, I did a poll on this sometime ago, there was little/nothing in it really.

I would have seriously considered the 1.9 if it wasn't for the fact I wanted the 4x4 variant. The main thing that sealed it for the 2.0 was resale; I think they will be more desirable come the time to sell, although I intend to keep this car a very long time ;) (famous last words)

I drove the 1.9 and 2.0, and bought the 2.0

The 1.9 comes with a 5 speed box, the 2.0 has a 6 speed gearbox.

The 1.9 is an 8v engine, the 2.0 is a 16v engine.

You really do notice the difference between the engines, there is not much in it economy wise. The 2.0 uses more fuel but, but at motorway speeds when using 6th gear the 2.0 engine is much quieter ambling along at 80mph compared to the 1.9.

The 2.0 can be remapped to give quiet a decent output, in excess of a standard vRS TDi whereas options on the 1.9 are limited.

On a mixture of Motorway/A roads on my commute including some stop/start traffic on the M25 I can get more than 550 miles from a tank of diesel. The last one went for 570 before needing to refuel.

Great! Thanks for your help... I guess I will be looking out for the 140bhp model then!

Peter.

I test drove the 1.9TDI and decided I needed a 2.0TDI. I came from a Leon Cupra 1.8 turbo (petrol) and noticed the reduction in power in the 1.9. Apart from a standing start the 2.0 feels just as fast, if not faster, than my old 1.8T. Mine's a 55 plate 2.0TDI Ambiente hatch that I've had from new.

My driving is mainly commuter stuff and the car has averaged a calculated 45mpg over it's lifetime. Longer distances on A roads and motorways sees it return a calculated 54mpg.

I had a 140bhp Elegance with DSG and loved it, drove it hard and it never complained about much apart from an exhaust pressure sensor which was fixed under warranty. The standard stereo is good - never seen the need to upgrade it and if you're careful, 60mpg is on the cards. Go spend your money and enjoy....

I've driven both and agree with the above. The 140 was slightly more nippy and was better at overtaking I found.

Depends on the driving you do TBH. As for mpg, I could'nt tell much of a difference between the two. Both returned 50 mpg under my driving style.

I went for the 140 and love it.

I am very impressed with the stock stereo in the Elegance. Better then my Ford Focus units. I have not even installed my sub yet since the sound is so good. Again, your opinion my vary since some people like to hear different sounds.

IMHO the treble is far too high and nasty so I've tweaked mine right down. Bar from that I'm impressed.

deffinatly go for the 140, driven both regularly and i used to loathe the pd105, my dads got the same engine in his passat and it feels really under powered in the bigger car

plantman: the trebble, disconnect the tweaters in the rear doors and use the front/rear fader to send a bit more volume to the back, sounds soo much better. was the first thing i did to my vRS and just got my passat and had to do the same

Slightly OT now but got to agree about the stock speakers. I took out the Stream and put in a Clarion unit and there's no distortion when I crank up the volume, even when it's so high that I feel the driver seat vibrating :) When I went to higher volume with the Stream the bass was awful - really distorted. Shows how the HU can make a big difference.
