Gears

Featured Replies

Hi

Wonder if anyone can tell me the possible problems.

My Octavia has just recently had a new clutch fitted since then I have found 2nd and 3rd gear a bit of a struggle to get in it makes a clunking noise but always manage to get it in gear.

Last night there was a grinding/clunking noise and my car slowed right down so I pulled up and left it there, I can still get it in gear and the engine starts up no problem but the car will not move almost like there seems a problem with gear change and the car moving.

Does this sound like the dreaded gearbox going or indeed something not so sinister.

Thanks in advance

If there was a grinding/clunking noise and the car will not move when you put it in gear and try to drive I would check to see that both drive shafts are connected to the gearbox. The inner CV joints bolt to the flanges on the box and it is possible that they may have come loose if they were not tightened correctly.

Hi

Thanks for you reply.

What you have explained is exactly what happened however, the Garage seem to think its the gearbox I find this hard to believe altho I am not really up on cars myself plus I have spoken with others and like yourself have mentioned the drive shafts, do you think I shuold go for a 2nd opinion.

In addition to this would you be able to steer the car if the drive shafts had gone?

Thanks

I would have thought so, unless they jammed in a position preventing the outer CV joint from turning.

It could be the gearbox, or the driveshafts not being properly engaged.

My first thought was of the gear linkage not being aligned correctly after the clutch change. I hope for your sake it's the shafts, because that is clearly the fault of the garage that did the clutch change!
