Alloy Bolts

Featured Replies

Hi folks, new to the forum and seeking advice. I apologise if this is not the right place to air this or it has been done before.

Bought a set of used VW Bora alloys which I will pick up in 3 weeks. Need to know what size of bolts I require for this as aware I need those specifically for alloys. I have a mark one 2002 Octavia.

I have just been at the scrappy's and got some off an old Golf's alloys, and the actual thread is 30mm, whilst the old bolt from the steel wheel is around 25mm. Any ideas?

Your standard bolts will be just fine, assuming the Bora alloys are factory ones.

I thought that with alloys that you had to get special bolts as the old bolts for the steel wheels would actually dig into the softer compund of the alloy? Can you clarify this please?

As far as I am aware the Bora alloys appear to be genuine originals from the car and not aftermarket ones.

Does this actually make a difference from what you implied it appears to be the case?

There are two main different types on wheel bolts.

One with a radius seat and ones with a taper seat. This refers to the shoulder on the bolt where it contacts with the wheel when done up. It is essentail for the right type of bolt to be used.

All you need to know really is that all modern VAG vehicles (aside from a few like the Sharan and Touareg) use an M14 x 1.5 wheel bolt, 27mm in length with a radius seat. So regardless of steel or alloy wheels the bolt is designed to be the same. it is this way as most of the cars with alloy wheels have a steel spare.

Thanks for the clarity in this and really appreciate the information as now I don't need to worry and will just use the same bolts for the new alloys when they come. Many thanks.:)

Torqued to 120nm
