Common problems? Door lock and water tank sensor?

Featured Replies

My drivers side front door lock doesn't work when using the remote... if I use the key it will unlock / lock fine, just not when using the remote. However sometimes 1 out 10 goes it will lock / unlock when using the remote. Been to Skoda they have said it needs a new control unit / loom which would be £347! :( I'd rather not pay this if there is a cheaper way of fixing this... anyone have any ideas? Would it be worth taking it to an auto-electrician?

Also - sometimes when cold - the temp warning light comes on when I turn the key (with the engine off) - if I switch the car off and on again it is okay again... is this just the water expansion tank? (circa £9) or do I need a new sensor? Skoda quoted £47 for this to be fixed. I found this on honestjohn:

"If red warning light comes on in very cold weather on start up to say Engine Overheating, it isn't. It's a faulty sensor. Car needs new expansion tank at £9 + 10 minutes to fit. Switching engine off and then on sometimes cures it."

Thanks

Josh

There's a good chance the central locking is the driver's door loom, not the control unit. Brings the bill down to £15 for parts, plus labour.

£47 for the expansion tank - I presume that's fitted, with a minimum labour charge, and an allowance for some G12+.

You can try cleaning the two "prongs" inside the coolant tank, as they are the sensor. They can get a build up of bubbles on them, which makes the car think the coolant level is too low. The easiest way to clean them, is to rub a long bladed screwdriver along them, effectively breaking the bubbles.

This approach worked for mine i did it about a year ago when the light came on several times over the course of a week. Not happened again since, so I can recommend this.

I have the coolant warning light thing on an 02 Fabia I bought. The garage has replaced the tank but it still happens every time the weather's the slightest bit cold. Does everyone eventually put up with it or short out the sensor?

It's only been a month or so and I'm thoroughly sick of its "Ooh, it was cold out here last night, I feel sure there's something wrong with my radiator, bleep, bleep ,bleep!" I accidentally caught the handbrake on the last notch today which set off the bleep for that and my first reaction was "WHAT NOW!!"
