Another Columbus/bluetooth problem

Featured Replies

I have the factory installed Columbus, and can't get it to work with any phone. I've tried my iPhone, 2 Nokias and a Sony E K810i. The result is the same everytime: The phone pairs nicely, phonebook and calls are downloaded, I can make calls and hear people, but no one can hear what I am saying. I suspected a faulty mic, but the garage denies this and claim it must be a compatibility issue. When I use the multi-wheel to issue voice commands, it also can't hear me. Did anyone experience anything similar?

Anders

Hello,

If I remember rightly in the menu of the columbus there is an option to turn the mic on or off have you looked at that, may be worth a look.

Nice suggestion, and I did try that. No matter how that switch is set, no audio leaves the car (and it would be strange if the default seting was "off" everytime you made a phone call). The garage has acknowledged the issue, but blames the phones only, which I find a bit odd.Anders

All the evidence is pointing at a fault with the car. It's hugely improbable that 4 different phones would exhibit exactly the same fault.

Do the phones work with a bluetooth headset? If so, then there is nothing wrong with their ability to transmit audio over bluetooth. Therefore, it must be the microphone system in the car which is having problems.

Personally, I'd take the car to a different dealer, as these guys sound like a bunch of muppets.

Also, have you checked the Skoda compatibility list? Are any of your phones on it? If not, see if you can try a phone that is. If that still doesn't work, then the garage has got to investigate further. If they won't, phone Skoda customer services in your country, and complain very loudly.

Thanks bagpuss. Is there an official list of compatible phones? I've seen many lists in various forums, but they all seemed "handmade" by Skoda/Audi/VW owners.....

Anders

Hi Anders,

Can you tell me where you are based? I'll then see if I can find a compatibility list that's specific for where you live. I know you aren't in the UK, as we don't get the GSMII bluetooth which your car has.

Great, thanks a lot. I am danish, but the car is bought from new in Sweden. It's made in week 5 :-) , so it's pretty new.......Anders

No worries. I'll help if I can.

Could you tell me what model of Nokia phones you are trying?

Did you get chance to try them with a bluetooth headset, or better still, on another car kit?

Does your local dealer have a Superb demonstrator with the bluetooth kit? If so, could you try your phone with their car?

Failing that, is it possible to go back to the supplying dealer in Sweden?

I have tried with a Nokia 6120 classic and a 5300. They have both been used to transfer data to/from a laptop via bluetooth. And since I can make and hear calls via columbus, I assume that they transport audio ok. Ill go back to dealer and see if they have another car with the car kit in the showroom, or try my local dealer in Denmark.

The dealer didn't give up on me yet, but seem to blame the phones or the Columbus software, whereas I insist that there must be a fault somewhere.

So, the more information I can gather, the better. They claim that the Skoda factory said only the following phones work:

Nokia 6310, 6600 E50 and E60. Sony K510i, K610i and 810i. But that doesnt add up with any list I have seen so far, and i did try the 810i.

As I understand it, with GSM III and Columbus, the phone is actually built into the car but uses the SIM in your handset via rSAP. So the way I look at it, there shouldn' be any audio going over Bluetooth anyway. You can (allegedly) make emergency phone calls with the system without a paired handset being available.

My money's on your mic being u/s, but I'm no expert - far from it.

That would be the case if Anders' car had GSMIII, but it doesn't. He has GSMII. We can tell this because he was able to download contacts and pair with an iPhone. GSMIII (using rSAP) is only standard on UK Elegance cars.

With the GSMII kit, the phone is still used as the connection mechanism to the network. The GSMII kit is simply a handsfree device with some integration into the Bolero or Columbus.

I think you're right though. It does still sound like a microphone issue in the car.

Well, I did say I know sweet FA! :)

Ah, I've just found your posting on GSM II vs III from October last year. Wonderfull thing, is Google.

Unsure if the Superb should add any difference. But for your info - i have an 2008 Octavia 2 running Columbus/MFD3 and have had it working with S-E K850 and iPhone 3G. Both work fine - although the K850 did need a firmware update to be 100% ok.

Sounds like an install or config issue to me.

The garage actually did order a new mic, but said that didnt help, so they are slightly clueless, but to me it also seems like some sort of configuration problem. I tried another SE today, the W800i, but with the usual result; my voice didnt leave the car:)

Could you have a look at the BT module under the passenger seat - and tell us the part number - that might help clarify things.

Where in Denmark are you living? I would love to give a hand or maybe use a VCDS tester on the car to check for error codes. I am in Århus....

I tried looking under the seat, but there was no label at all on the module, it was just an aluminium box mounted to the floor, and since it's still under warranty, i didnt really feel like taking it apart;).

Unfortunately, I am in Roskilde, but thanks for the very nice offer:thumbup:.

I guess its back to the swedish dealer with more complaints( I just need some verbal ammo):P

Hi, I've picked up a late 2012 Superb today and have the same problem with my Blackberry. It's paired, I can make and receive calls, I can hear the other person clearly but they can't hear me. I appreciate that this thread is old but I wonder if anyone found a solution? I've yet to try another phone in it, but will try that tomorrow - then I'm back to the dealer.

Any tips?

It sounds like a microphone problem. It will be in the light unit above the driver and is easily and cheaply replaced.

Can you give any instructions to the voice command to check its not the microphone that's knackered

It looks as though you're right. Thank you for the tip, sadly I didn't think about that. It's not accepting voice commands so it does look like a mic issue. I'll get it back to the dealer as it's still under warranty. Thanks for your help.
