RNS 510 questions

Featured Replies

So finally its in my car, 5 Min swap. Did I mention that I'm in heaven and SWMBO are ****ed? Anyhow, the usual round of questions:

- When testing the nav part, it finds my destination really quick, but when driving, it goes all over the place (off road) and do not keep up. How come?

- Changed from a MFD 2 which where coded to work with my maxidot. Do I really need another go with a vagcom for the RNS510? All I have left in my Maxidot is MDF and Setup.

- The arial connector have a "dual plug" oposed to the singe arial antenna on the MFD 2. I've just mounted the single one in one of the two. Radio seem to be working fine. Input please? Do I need new wiring / Connector? And why?

- What is the latest FW. Mine seem to say SW-Version1024? It is the A-model

The Columbus has two antenna inputs for diversity, only one supplies AM signals. Generally you are better to use the innermost one of the two.

random positioning could be a problem with the GPS - Does it have a good signal?

Hi Stu, thanks for the fast reply. Yes I would say it does. Between 5-7 GPS Satellites. I remember having similar issues with the Nexus and it was a question of positioning. However it fell in place by itself.??

Another issue discovered. The unit randomly reboots itself

I would check your connections first and make sure the quadlock is correctly seated.

Where have you placed the GPS receiver?

Are you using the one that came with this unit?

When driving the rns510 gets its positioning data via GPS, and also the ABS sensors on the car. If you have a loose or poor connection, this could lead to corrupt data being sent to the unit so it gets confused as to its whereabouts.

Quadlock jiggled about, reconnected and seem properly connected. Changed the GPS antenna for a brand new and also changed the placement of the antenna itself. (Under the dash, pretty much the same as VRStu's Nexus guide) It is not the original Skoda GPS antenna though. Usually I have a 3D fix all the time and see most of the satellites.

The unit still randomly reboots itself and navigation goes nutters... :(

As far as I can see in the secret menu, there is no offset to the sensors, it says gps antenna connected, sensors calibrated etc. Does it need a round with VAGCOM?

if you were having simillar positioning issues with the MFD2 as well, it suggests something amiss elsewhere. Its quiet possible that the unit is randomly rebooting because of this corrupt data being recieved from the abs sensors over the canbus, a bit like a PC that crashes when it encounters a program error.

1024 is the latest firmware available for the A unit, but there is a modified version of the newer 904 which can be installed onto the A unit and adds B unit functionality.

Perhaps a stupdi question, but is there a RNS 510 coding how-to somewhere?

You don't really need it - VCDS has the helper.

so if I get someone with a vagcom cable hooked up to my car, it should be pretty straight forward even though they are not too familiar with the skoda setup?

Yes it's pretty obvious.

So a go with the vagcom didn't do it for me. The car is programmed as suggested (MFD2) but still no go with the RNS 510 and my maxidot. No faultcodes other than 00856 which would suggest antenna on the radio. I am about to leave it to the stealers...

Could this be a can gateway issue? Rumours has it that I might need a new can gateway in order to get the unit to play along with my maxidot. I know I need some new modules for parking sensor / climate display, but honestly thought that it would play along with my nov.05 plate car...Also, I am not gonna let the stealers have a go if I need a new can gateway, that would just be money down the drain.

Add* My currently can gateway is 1K0 907 530 F. Rumour wants it to be at least Q.... could anyone confirm?

Hi kryppe, my can gateway is the same as yours ( 1K0 907 530 F )and the RNS 510 and Maxidot both work together. If it helps here is the coding fo it, Coding: 3D3F0748071303

Changed the coding to the correct one. oops

Thanks for the reply chris.

That is good to hear. At this stage, I suspect to potential issues. 1. My coding is bad 2. The RNS 510 is bad. The last where actually suggested from someone who should know his stuff, but Im not to sure that everything else seems to work as it should but not the maxidot.

Kryppe: Which RNS-510 are you trying? Is it really a VW part or the Skoda equivalent?

They come in two variants - One for new display types and one for old. You need to code differently depending on the year ant type of your car.

Do a search for BAP protocol (which should be off in an O2 '05 model)

If in doubt, send me an e-mail. I am in Denmark and would like to help you.

That's good news, enjoy it

Hi Kryppe

I've been having similar problems to you. I've also splashed out on a cable ;)

I may be back to ask you how you did it if I have no luck tonight.

I miss being able to change the music with the steering wheel...
