Lit up like a Christmas Tree - dead PAS

Featured Replies

So, my dash is beeping, lit up like a christmas tree, PAS dies, tach and temp guage go nuts. I have read every single one of spevie's posts I could find. It seems the poor guy never figured it out? Makes me feel really hopeful....

Car:

2002 Fabia Classic. The super simple model with nothing to write home about. Heated seats, headlamp washers, left hand drive, 90A alternator, ABS.

Here's what I have done:

- soldered sense wire (D+ blue from alternator)

- voltage seems to be at 14.0-14.2v when running (measured with a ScanGuage II, thus read every 2 seconds)

- Bought a new battery 12.5v when off. (62ah to replace the aged 55ah that came with)

- new metal PAS position sensor

- cleaned out as much debris as I could throughout the engine compartment. I live in a forest, so there were lots of maple seed and leaves stuck in various places.

- removed the soaking wet foam from around the PAS pump, hosed with copious amounts of WD40.

Weather/road conditions:

-15 C to +5 C and lots of snow/ice/mud on the extremely rutted country road.

Current issues:

- Airbag light on (wasn't on until Santa came to town)

- Intermittent Christmas effect, usually after a bit of a drive, or just pulling in to a parking spot

Tools I don't have:

- VAG-COM

Part on order:

- voltage regulator

- VAG-COM

Plans for the weekend:

- check all major wiring between alternator and battery.

Out of curiosity, did spevie end up pushing his car off a cliff or did he get it fixed? I now drive with ear plugs since I know nothing is really wrong with the car.

highlight "intermittent" under 'Current issues:'

Ouch! Sorry I've no answers but I thought that someone should post a reply to make you feel welcome! Pity about Santa "giving" you a an airbag problem - he gave me the later version of VAG-COM or VCDS, maybe he got our addresses mixed up - sorry.

Check for debris in the plenum chamber, if water collects in there it can get into the wiring loom, and cause all sorts of problems.

  • Author

I have the Scandinavian PDI done to my loom, so about 10 cm of the sheath is gone right above the body member that collects water and debris. The loom is also suspended above it by about 8 cm. In other words, if water gets it, it gets out, too. Regardless, I'll be ridding the car of all the excess debris it has collected over the years.

I'm starting to wonder if there is some other common wear location in the circuit that feeds the PAS pump. My hypothesis is that potentially something is worn/corroded in the signalling portion of the PAS and can potentially be affecting the board inside the pump. My pump just looks corroded right about where all the cables go into it. There was also copious amounts of debris collected there. Does anyone have experience rebuilding one of these? Or pictures of the circuitry/guts?

Another reason why I am suspecting the internal circuitry of the pump is the fact that I hit a ditch about when the PAS stopped behaving like just a PAS sensor failure. The low speed impact was a direct hit on the pump. It makes me wonder if the seals on the pump make have given way a bit to allow water ingress there.

Is this plausible?

A second option (which requires VAG-COM to diagnose) is the ABS module intermittent failure. It also suffers from water ingress and luckily is a known Skoda design flaw. That means I might be able to get some sort of compensation for the fix. I found it in this link:

http://briskoda.net/maintenance-performance/help-dash-lit-up-like-xmas-tree-dodgy-abs-module/86997/

The description of the dash lights is similar, however the speedo and gas guage work fine. It's the tach and the temp guage which fail on mine. My ScanGaugeII still receives the correct information via the OBD port for both tach and temp.

Added note: ABS functions on a road test when in Christmas mode.

I couldn't get into many of the modules, in particular engine and ABS, so those bits are not interrogated.

So now what? Push it off a cliff? It drives fine, just beeps all the damn time.

So I spent the day cleaning all the crap out of more nooks and crannies. There sure was a lot, but I think I got most of it. BTW, who in their right mind puts a wiring loom through a low point ina location designed to collect water, then puts carpeting around the wiring loom and the computer? And then fasten everything with one-time use plastic screws? Is failure designed in? Ha!

Regardless, got a new code. Fun times, I tell ya.

01312 - Power Train Data Bus

37-10 Faulty

---------------------

I have a feeling that it has to be some central hub that is all screwed up since I get every error code in the book (like ABS, PAS, etc). They go away and come back intermittently. Anyone know where connections to this thing can be located? Manual and *real* Vagcom are on order.

Edited by snp

I seem to remember having a problem "talking" to the engine controller on my wife's BBY engined Polo 9N with VAG-COM 409.?? - so you might have more success if you alter the baud rate and try again. As for your other problems I've no answers other than I did manage to talk to the ABS system okay using VAG-COM 409.??.

  • Author

My guess now is that after I hit the ditch (really not hard, but enough to crack plastic), the PAS is having some kind of internal short dropping communications across the board. It's the only consistent fault aside from the Powertrain Data Bus (whatever that is).

Question becomes.... what other PAS pumps can I drop in there? I finally have the real VAG-COM and can do the work myself.

Am I insane, or is this making sense?

Here are some reads after clearing once or twice.

Update, because I know you are all so interested. You are all sitting at the edge of your seat either grinning that you know the answer or are wondering if I'll ever figure it out. The saga continues...

Without a Haynes or any other manual, I figured out which fuses are to the PAS and yanked them. I won't tell you what they are since nobody in this forum has said what they are. I also won't tell you where they are either. Heck, there could even be more than 4 fuses to the PAS scattered throughout the car and impossible to find without dismantling everything. And then you need vag-com to get the secret code to allow you to remove the fuse.

So, in short, I removed the power lead to the PAS pump and magically EVERY SINGLE ERROR CODE went away. Communications between vag-com and the car became super fast and easy. Wanna see?

What this means is the computer in the pump is faulty. Or at least the power supply to the computer in the pump is. I know I'm talking to a wall here, but hey, has anyone actually tried taking a pump apart, cleaning it up and putting it back on? I'm sure it's just some simple connection problem since the whole thing is all corroded on the outside and probably on the inside due to Skoda's strategic placement of a highly expensive unnecessary part.

Should I give it a go and document it if it works out? Would you like that?

Meanwhile, no more beeps and no more power steering. Just like the old days.

  • 8 months later...

Hi, Did you ever get this fixed and if so would you mind telling e what you did? I have a similar if not the same problem, actually think my pump has died but just trying to explore all the options before forking out all the "hard earned" I was also empathising woth your talking to yourself phase, been there, done that.
